Dear Battara or Jose'; the flag is a Sulu panji or Sulu sultanate flag dated 1900 circa; this kind of flag appears in Sulu archipelago after 1899/1900; about the symbol you mentioned it's a great enigma!!! Someone say the symbol on it is a comb meaning the female world (the male world is symbolized by a kris );we can find out these symbols ion some native (samal or Badjao flags) not on a Sultanate flag for some other scholars the white circle with the symbol on it symbolized a shield; i think that's not correct : we have many other Sulu flags with the circle and one or two stripes vertically or horizontally placed , so what's the meaning of them ? why they are so different from the symbol you mentioned ? "Your" symbol can represented a shield , better the back of the shield but we can't understand the reasons why they placed a shield showing its back side.... . Few researchers say that the circle can symbolize the moon just... once again what's the symbol (black or blue ? ) on it ? As you can see at present we have so many interpretations and so many few evidences; anyway, i hope i , or someone else will be able to explain this symbol very soon.

Dear David, i'm agree with you, the black star was not a national symbol, maybe just a decorative symbol on the salakot of Bonifacio (but i would like to know more about this topic ); anyway, about the stars i know well that many Countries adopted the star as a symbol on flags , coat of arms , seals but the U.S.A. have been the first Country that adopted the star with a meaning of:" a star for every State, Territory or geographic entity..., " before this concept was almost unknown... Some muslim States adopted the star on their flags and symbols but with a different meaning, one of the first was Turkey,( better the Ottoman Empire ) in XVIII century, the other States adopted the stars following the ottoman style because Konstantinyie (Istanbul ) was a sacred place and hometown of the Sultan :" The admiral of the faith ". About the traditional colors of the United Stated you are right: they were mutuated by the Washington's symbols...Maryland is another good sample where they adopted heraldic symbols as a symbol of the State.
Stay well
Paolo

Hi Bil, great work !!!! When you will publish the filipino flags in your collection ? About the shoulder strap " Shoulder strap of the revolutionary period based on the design of the Philippines flag. Unit and purpose are currently unknown, but it may date from the pre-1898 period when cuff rank was in use. ") I just wanna tell you that the filipino flag with blue ,red, white and stars and sun was born in Hong Kong in may 1898 so the shoulder strap can't be a pre- 1898 item....
