On the way home I happened to see the start of this television program on the bus. As it happened it was on General Gregorio del Pilar. That of course intrigued me so I rushed home to watch.
The documentary was standards stuff as documentaries go but what really got to me were the uniforms - they were (unsurprisingly and sadly) really really bad. You'd think they could at least gotten some decent Rayadillos or even pajamas striped blue and white but this was some of the worst costuming ever. They were wearing white MP plastic PISTOL BELTS for pity's sake! I mean couldn't they have found some decent leather belts at the bargain store? white pistol belts my goodness. The American uniforms weren't much better - stock blue shirts, everyone wearing boots (they could afford white pistol belts, couldn't they have used white leggings instead) straw hats. I even saw one American with a Guardia civil red chevron. They used CAT straight swords instead of sabers and their pistol lanyards looked like they were strangling them.
The acting and direction was really rather sad - some of the American soldiers weren't even cradling the butts of their rifles properly - they were holding them like BAZOOKAS. The directing was singularly uninspired as well.
I know that this was probably just done cheap and all but there are groups like Buhay Ng Kasaysayan out there who could have given of their time and expertise to make these things look right.
And where the heck do they rent these costumes? The Santacruzan?
My goodness those were really really bad.
This one's another episode... the Del Pilar episode should come out in a week or so...
