Nice pictures, VeeVee. Finding pictures of P-40s in the Philippines is very difficult. I might have made a stab at that album!!

From the item's description:
This is a great set of 10 4 x 6 photos of pilots and aircraft of the 20th Pursuit Squadron commanded by Lts Moore in the Philippines in 1941. Included are Lt Moore, Loux, Gies, Crellin, White, Geer & Hughes.

Interesting to note that in the pic of Lt. Varian White (solo standing near the USAAC roundel of the P-40B), you will notice that the aircraft had a telescopic gun sight instead of the standard bead and ring type.
The P-35A still had the red color id on the cowling, to identify this aircraft belonged to the 3rd PS. The color assignments before wartime were red - 3rd PS, white - 17th PS, and blue for 20th PS.
Thanks for posting.

No kidding -- I wrote an article on markings of USAAF a/c in the Philippines 1937-42 for the IMPS magazine about 1985 - looking back, it is pretty primitive. Wish I could have hooked up with Eljefe and a couple of other people on this forum before writing it. (Of course, the small problem of the Internet not existing, but we could have worked it out!!)

Hi Rick, its not to late to work on something and would be glad to help you out in any which way I can. Your 1985 work is not primitive. Yiour efforts paved the way for us modelers and historians to be on the lookout for more stuff. Here are a few more 20th PS shots from my collection: P-40B of the 20th PS just chewed the tail of another P-40B at Nichols Field in early-mid 1941. P-40Bs of the 20th PS in flight. No. 56, No. 50 and possibly No. 10 but need to confirm the number of the last aircraft during a familiarization flight. P-40B possibly No. 52 or 53. If tis No. 53, hen this was the aircraft assigned to Lt. Charley Sneed (sources say that this was also renamed to No. 48). This one you may have all seen but I am posting it anyway. A P-40B being assembled at the Philippine Air Depot (Nielson's Field) THe next set of photos are not related to the 20th PS but its related to early USAAC aircraft in the P.I. Thought of sharing it as well. P-35A Seversky (unidentified unit) at Loakan Airfield, Baguio in mid 1941. more wrecks. A Martin B-10 of the 28th BS at Loakan Airfield, Baguio Thomas Morse O-19 at Iba Airfield O-46s of the 2nd Observation Group during a familiarization flight possibly over Del Monte , Mindanao For sure a lot have seen this one but here it is: B-17D at Iba Airfield. Note the A-27 at the back of the photo. P-26A of the 17th Purshuit Squadron at Iba Airfield on gunnery practice. Note the use of orthochromatic film made the yellow wings and tail planes look darker that the True Blue 23 fuselage. This photo inspired me to build a 1/48 model of the same aircraft. Cheers, Tony aka: El Jefe

20th PS P-40Bs were the sames as the fuselage color (Olive Drab). Most P-40B and Es that were shipped to the Philippines retained their original paint. Red was the original squadron color of the 3rd Pursuit Squadron but was changed to yellow prior to war. Most of the photos I have seen of the spinners of P-40Bs of the 20th PS were in Olive drab. There may have been an exception but I doubt if it was in red.
Just my two centavos worth.

Hello,
My Great Uncle Joe P. McLaughlin was part of the 20th PS. He went MIA on Mar 10, 42. Would you happen to have any pictures of him?
Thank You,
Darryn C. Rehart
