Hey did anyone watch "Shootout!" on the history channel last night? It featured the heroic efforts of the Philippine Scouts during the early part of the war defending Bataan. They mentioned how tenacious the scouts were and how they repelled attack after attack and they also mentioned how good a shot the filipinos were. They re-enacted a brave effort by a scout named Narciso (can't remember the last name) who defended his position by himself after his a-gunner had been killed against wave after wave of japanese charges, bayoneting one japanese and shooting another up close. Finally the japanese gave up trying to breach the line defended by the scouts and decided to move west to try to breach the line defended by regular philippine army troops. I taped it, I'll try to make screen caps if I can.

WHOAA.... I was out but my Tivo should have recorded it! Let me check... Thanks for the info. ...nope. somehow it didn't record. Can you post some screen shots if you can? Thanks. Is this the episode: Shootout : Raid on Bataan Death Camp Aired on Saturday December 02 01:00 AM With the American fleet still smoldering in Pearl Harbor, the Japanese attack the Philippines. Thousands of American GIs and their Filipino allies are surrounded on the Bataan Peninsula. The American-led force finally surrenders, only to be subjected to the horrors of the Bataan Death March. Three years later the American military return to the shores of the Philippines on a secret mission to liberate 500 Allied prisoners still languishing behind the barbed wire of the Cabanatua death camp. Captain Bob Prince and Lt. Robert Andersen were there, and they take us shot-by-shot through one of the most daring lightning raids in history.

yep that's the one. The 2nd half of the show was all about the great cabanatuan raid, but the first half was all about the invasion of the philippines by the japanese and the defense and eventual surrender of the allied forces on bataan. I'll try to make screen caps tonight if I can.

According to a friend, the reenactment scenes were done here in Los Angeles. There seems to be a whole unit of Filipino Scout reenactors right here in SoCal that we don't know about. WE"VE GOT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THESE GUYS.
I don't have cable but I'm told the reenactment action sequences were all great plus the fact that the whole shootout episode was a one hour special rather than just the usual 30 minute show.
Can anyone help me get a copy of this? We need to take note of the credits as to which reenactment groups were involved in this.

Screen captures. The machine gunner was Narciso Odulano (sounds like Odulano but I need to look up the name). Very well done. The name is PFC Narcisco Ortilano. I found the description of the skirmish in the book "Bataan, Our Last Ditch". He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. In the morning after the attack, they found him bleeding and still in his position. When asked what happened, he said 11 Japanese tried to scare him.

Did the book mention if he survived the war and/or is still alive today?

No the book didn't mention what happened to him. However I can infer that he survived the war but has since passed away. In all my history readings, most detailed skirmish accounts like that of PFC Ortilano would have been told by those who survived. When a history book changes points of view from big picture to accounts of squad level action, it would have been told by someone who survived and was alive at the time of the book writing. In addition, I saw a list of Distinguished Service Cross recipients on the web with certain recipients marked as KIA. Ortilano was not marked as KIA. So I think he survived the war. However, the PSHS has a recent list of living Philippine Scouts and PFC Ortilano is not in the list. God bless his soul. That's my best guess but at the end of the day, it's only a guess.

I'm glad they used Garands in shooting the documentary. They had some bolt action Springfields but the Garand was the predominant rifle used in the portrayal. So many people think that the Garand only goes with the M1 "round" helmet soldier ;D I once had to support my claims and arguments in the WW2 Reenactor forum with passages and excerpts from books just to prove that the Scouts used Garands.

One of our reenactor friends ask us if we were the extras in that show. As he knew it was filmed here in California and we were the only Philippine reenactment group in the west coast. Unfortunately we did not even know about that documentary being made here. We could have helped it more as Philippine scouts. Philip

Hi Rogue, how are you doing?! Welcome to the forum Please check out the pictures and discussions on historical tidbits. There's been some good stuff posted over the months. On May 6th, there's a commemoration event at Fort MacArthur observing the 65th anniversary of the Fall of Corregidor. Info can be found here: pinoyhistory.proboards22.com/index.cgi?board=upcomingevents&action=display&thread=1174302286The guys are going to serve as color guards for the event. However the one in July is an actual battle reenactment with a public audience. Philip (Legionnaire) can fill you in. Vic
