On October 16, 1896, Florentino Collantes, one of the Filipino poets who spearheaded the revival of the Tagalog Literature, was born in Pulilan, Bulacan to Toribio Collantes of Baliwag, Bulacan and Manuela Tancioco of Pulilan.
Collantes was among the group who organized the first Balagtasan in 1925 in commemoration of the birth anniversary of Tagalog poet Francisco Balagtas Baltazar on April 2, 1925. The first ever Balagtasan which was held in Tayuman, Manila, four days of Balagtas' anniversary included writers Rosa Sevilla and Jose Corazon de Jesus.
