The Northern Virginia 4-H Center will be holding it's annual "Remount Depot Days" living history on 6 and 7 October. This is being done in conjunction with the Smithsonian's annual open house at it's research facility that it just across the road from the 4H Center. The purpose of the program is to educate the public on the history of Front Royal's Remount Depot and highlight the restoration efforts of the facility that are currently underway. All GI, Marine, Naval and civilian impressions from 1911 to 1950 are welcome to attend. Naturally emphasis will be placed on horses, mules, and canine use by the military so those impressions that support animal use is encouraged. Jeeps, WLAs, period civilian vehicles are welcome as well.
The program will run for two days starting at 0900 on 6 October and closing around 1700 or 5 p.m. on the 7th. It will take place at the original Remount Depot location with displays centered around the U shaped stall and quartermaster building. Participants will have free us of the 42 stall barn for horses and mules. Along with the three arenas for any demonstrations and a courtyard area for displays of equipment, tack, uniforms etc. The Quartermaster building will also be available for those that might have a clerk or admin impression that would like to actually "set up shop".
Historians are free to bivouac overnight on site and billet animals in the stalls. Free use of facilities in one of the lodges will also be available for showers and those that wish to sleep indoors.
Location of event: Northern Virginia 4-H Educational Center. 400 4-H Center Drive. Front Royal, VA 22630
