VIVA ESPANA!...VIVA EL REY!..VIVA EL ORDEN..Y LA LEY!
At long last I can now say I've seen this movie, and I'm not disappointed. It's pretty much like a Spanish version of "The Real Glory". Fernando Rey is like Gary Cooper, the "Tagalas" (Tagalogs) are like the "Moros". The heroes are besiged ( this time in a church), etc, It even has an officer character whose into botany and science.
Are there Filipinos in this movie?...apparently yes, they mostly play the mutinous Tagalog insurrectos of the town called Baler. But the lead "Tagalas" such as the Filipino commanders and the evil shop owner are played by Spanish actors in makeup. ;D The leading lady looks convincingly Filipina with slightly oriental eyes but will pass for a Spanish mestiza who happens to be in love with one of the Spanish soldiers holding out in the church.
Anyways, somewhere along movie, one of the pinoys shouts.."Walang babae ang mga Kastila!" (the Spanish have no women) , urging them to surrender so they can have active sex lives again?
Some of the pinoy insurrectos look like Chinese coolies, (they didn't have the right upong salakot), and at least one of them is seen carrying a muslim kris instead of a regular bolo or tabak; but the uniforms of the regular Filipino soldiers look just right, They used real Spanish Mausers and Remingtons here. The Filipinos even have a Spanish hotchkiss artillery piece (just like the one we use in our reenactments) to bombard the church. Generally, the Filipinos are portrayed with some dignity and are presented as civilized enough. The Philippine Army lined up in smart salute to the brave Spanish soldiers at the end of this movie.
The film is only in Spanish with no subtitles, but if you know the history behind the Siege fo Baler; it will not be so much a problem. All in all, it's worth watching.
