Hey Victor: Nice cartoons. Heading to cemetery to put up flags. Photo of cousin killed in action July 14, 1969 Viet Nam. I finally went to the wall a few years back. He was 20 years old. We were next of kin to notify and I answered the door when the two officers knocked. I was 18. I had to wake up my mom. I will never forget that day. His name is just above the medals "Joe Rodriguez" Not sure if he really fought for our freedom in those days, but he served with honor and will be remembered this weekend. Peace to all Rudy

Thanks for the posts, pictures and cartoons. Whenever I think of Veterans Day or Memorial Day, I think of this hauntingly beautiful verse on the Pacific War Memorial in the Philippines!! It never fails to send shivers up my spine and a tear in my eye. Although it applies to those who died in defense of freedom in the Philippines, as VeeVee says, it has a unversal theme. I hold up two veterans - Lauritz Anderson, who died in Vietnam - we went tthrough 1st grade through high school together, and Col. Sam Grashio, veteran of the 21st Pursuit Squadron and the Bataan Death March. May they (and all like them) rest in peace.

I'm not sure what the proper greeting is on Memorial Day--"Happy Memorial Day?" or "Reflective Memorial Day?" Whatever it is, I hope all you gentleman had a good one...I spent the weekend at a Memorial Day Reenactment, portraying 12th Quartermaster (PS) and 1st Filipino Regiment. It's nice to remind folks that the bravery of the Filipinos had a huge role in keeping America free. -Matt

Unfortunately, none on my camera--but a lot on visitors cameras! The event was billed as being Italy, 1944; I was sort of an infiltrator (I called my little corner Bataan). I wore khakis the first two days, and switched to the khaki shirt/denim fatigue pants the third day. The denim fatigue pants and beat-ip campaign hat were magnets for the public, especially in that sea of HBT's.

Hey Mandres....You are 100 percent correct. Although the US had allies, the UK, Russia,France,China, there was a fundamental difference with the Philippines. Filipinos and Americans in many instances shared the same foxhole on a daily basis. This cannot be said about our other allies. In most instances they had their theater, sector, etc to defend and we had ours, but in the PI in early 1942 the Fil/Amer forces were bound together in so many ways that it was unique, methinks. I am one who hopes that this fact doesn't get lost in history. The Filipinos were our first, and in my opinion, most loyal allies. They d**ned sure held up their end of the deal (especially the Scouts, the best soldiers in the Pacific War in my humble.) in 1942 and afterward in guerilla operations.

Thanks Indiosbravos, I really respect your opinion!
Oklahoma, you said it perfectly (in fact, I'll probably be quoting you at the next event)! A big part of my pitch is explaining that the Filipinos never left the fight. They weren't "rescued" by the US forces, as the Filipino guerrillas were slowly bleeding the Japanese dry...
Every time I get the honor to speak to a Filipino veteran, they always refuse to accept that they are heroes. If they aren't heroes, than none exist...

Hey Vic....I was just checking out the pics you took of your family 2010 Memorial Day outing at the local lake. Was just wondering what your lad was doing messing with "amphib" operations at "Pont du Hoc". He's a tried and true, 100 percent, "26th Cavalry Horse Soldier". You must speak to him of this. Cheers and have a great and memorable 2011 Memorial Day.
