I had help posting the images at a internet cafe in the Bario, so the text got a little scrambled as my assistant spoke little English. The event was the Costume/Contest/Convention hosted by Hobbiworx Comp. in Robinsons Mall, Manila, sat. 28th April 09. a very bazaar affair, as there were several categories & competitions. Historic figures (Us), Fantasy, Super-Heroes, and a Weird & Wonderful Hair fashion contest. So there was a surreal mix of space monsters, elves and gothic-horror creatures, cartoon characters, and warriors & soldiers throughout the ages all milling around in the centre of the mall! My nephew (& driver) was enthralled by Iron-man in a 8ft high fibre-glass armoured suit and a fellow with a green mask & yellow suit. I feasted my eyes on lots of pretty female Chinese "Flashing sword- Flying Tiger" beauties, when not posing for thousands of snapshots with many more delightful young ladies. I learned what a tough business it was, being a Star for the day!! Selwyn got us to do a little dramatic display showing some marshal skills on the tiny stage using a simple story thread. I begin by accosting a Guardia de Civil, as a drunk & offer my brandy flask. He declines and tries to arrest me. I then attack with my bolo & fall back shot, The Col. (Dano?) then attacks with his sword (fine swordfight followed) until he is down also. Lastly our flame-thrower from Ima-Jima WW2 torches the policeman! Selwyn's Guardia de Civil costume got first prize in our section. Alas I had to return to Angeles then as my nephew was working that night and it's a 3hr drive at that time of day. It gave me a great opportunity to met with the BNK lads. I shall meet up with them May 12th when I go to Manila to buy CD's of Rev. War songs etc. the following day I plan to make sketches of Gen. Geronimo's photo-picture in the Gateway Mus. in Cavite. No snaps are allowed & his pic. is not in the catalogue either. I just wish Danny Dizon was fit enough to come also. Then I can begin the oil-painting I've always wanted to do. "Wont you get bored all on your own for 6 months in the Phil. & away from London"? HA!!! I'm loving it!

Lolz, if we got there earlier we could have fought the US Marine with the Flame Thrower with our MP40 and Walther PPK hehe... It's actually weirdly funny how little attention the security guards pay to a one armed, one eyed guy with a briefcase... Long live Holy Germany...

Damit Tom, I knew it was a mistake to leave early--as soon as your back is turned, the Germans invade! Ha Ha. Alas my nephew/driver had to get us back to Angeles in time for his nightwork. Lucky for you the guards hadn't seen Valkerie, nicksvar? Saw you attracted the Blonds strait off!

Hehehe... my bad actually - I was running late for the event and - as usual - there were a ton of last minute things to attend to (not the least of which was one of my coat buttons SNAPPED and had to be resewn losing us some 5 minutes). Well, you know what they say - this is a military operation, nothing ever goes according to plan.

Sigh... sadly I didn't make it on the 12th - my stupid boss declared it a working holiday (of all the nerve). But I showed the flag at the 8th Philippine ToyCon, held at SM Megamall on the 13th. I don't know if they've done a toy of the Guardia Civil - but if anyone ask's I'm playing Tano/Carolino, the son of Cabesang Tales in El Filibusterismo. After being called 'Guardia Civil' everytime I wore my 24th (2nd Warwickshires) Regiment of Foot 1879 uniform, it was rather gratifying to have people getting the uniform right. "What is your profession!!?" Night at the Philippine National Museum Advancing under cover of darkness Adelante perros! Por la Patria! Sadly still no available Remington Rifles here - had to make do with an older flintlock. With very special thanks to Bill Combs (Agmohio) for providing extensive info and pics on the uniform in the first place at his splendid site, Los Rayadillos. Cheers all, Tom

Looks like last man standing! With you & Selwyn that makes enough Tiradores to get a hit on Lawton,He He. I don't know of of many makers of soldiers of the Revolution, apart from an American Company doing "Boxer Rebellion " lead figs 54mm, and UK (Britains?) Cuban War set, same size. There is of course, Mini-figs 15mm Cuban War Figs. I have had some carved in wood, here in Angeles, Pampanga. The sculpture made them at 8 inches tall, 6" and one at 4.5 inches! ( I challenged him to make one as small as he could in wood) All are painted now & I've sent pics of them to VeeVee. One is a very good image of myself and the others were copied from BNK Photos. Each fig cost me P1500. The Chap said that in truth he preferred to work on figs of 8inches to 12" in size (same price). I can Email pics to you if you like. My Email = dbanaghan@hotmail.co.uk & order via Ben Tolentino (Furniture, & Sculptures) Email=benjamintolentino51@yahoo.com. I must try to get a T.D.L.M uniform for myself. Shame about the event being scratched for the 22nd June in Manila. I return to London 26 July, for 2 months & would like to squeeze another event in beforehand. I'm off to Tarlac Sun. 21st June to tour & research Gen. Makabulos. Wife's Great uncle was Capt. Tanedo, killed in action against Spaniards & has a street named in his honour. Keep the flag flying, Tom! Salute--David

I see you have a been awarded the Spanish order of military merit medal pinned on your chest there Tom....¡Saludos y Felicidades! If only you can fashion a "tricorno" hat like this, you could do an impression of the more contemporary civil guard as well. Instituto, gloria a Ti, por tu honor quiero vivir. Viva España, Viva el Rey, Viva el Orden y la Ley, Viva honrada la Guardia Civil

Hi guys,
Well one can always modify the readily available Tamiya and Dragon type 1/35 scale soldiers - I was doing a diorama of Hogarth's March of the Guards to Finchley a year or so ago (kinda got sidetracked since then) but I got the figures for them and with patience its not hard to modify. Of course, wood would last longer and Filipino woodcarvers are amazing.
Yea, that's the Spanish order of military merit custom made here - I'm thinking though, if I'm playing Tano from El Filibusterismo, he probably wouldn't have the war grade (red) military merit for war action but the military grade (white) for non-combat action (garrison duty in the Carolinas and back in the Philippines hunting down his dad's - Matanglawin's - tulisanes). I'll probably do a military grade one and just save the war grade one for a future Manuel Sityar uniform.
I could actually do a tricorno pretty easy - its amazing how many hats you can make the Filipino straw hat into. Right now though I'm working on a British Coldstream Guards uniform to go with my L85A1 and faux bearskin. I actually had a Guards type costume for one of the international days at church but I was never satisfied with it - I'm going to make a proper one this time.
Meanwhile, yea, if I can get the Sityar uniform done, Evan can wear the Guardia soldado uniform and with Selwyn in the Tiradores uniform we can probably take on Lawton - anyone care for a small scale reenactment this year? ;-)
