Wow! That brass Philippine Eagle plate is a rare find. I can imagine how much he paid for it on ebay! Thanks for the detailed photograph. Do they have the disappearing gun pits ? Philip

Do they have the disappearing gun pits ? Philip I didn't see any. Probably because the span of water being protected did not warrant the range of a disappearing gun. Fort Delaware is on an island in the middle of the river across from Fort Mott, which adds to the defense.

Even as narrow as the river is, and with the presence of Fort Delaware in the middle of the river, and Fort Dupont, almost directly across the river, there were three 10-inch disappearing guns and two 12-inch disappearing guns. They were located in the main gun line of emplacements, with four 5-inch guns and two 3-inch guns located at the ends of the gun line. Hopefully this link will take you to an aerial where it is much easier to identify the disappearing gun emplacements than it is from the ground. You can see them in the center. From ground level, you just see the magazines; the gun platforms are on a second level well above the ground, where the gun pits are identifiable. local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&cp=39.603791~-75.551589&style=a&lvl=17&tilt=-90&dir=0&alt=-1000&sp=Point.pq7h6It's a unique coast artillery fort in that almost all the emplacements are in the "gun line", and it has a "parados" (roughly an earthen wall) behind the gun line to protect it from fire from upriver if ships had made it past the fort. It was built early in what is called the "Endicott" era of coast artillery (late 1890's), later forts such as Fort Mills on Corregidor dispersed the batteries over much larger areas when possible. We're glad you came out Victor, hope you had a good time. I wish I had been there! Regards, Andy Bennett Do they have the disappearing gun pits ? Philip I didn't see any. Thanks for the clarification. I didn't see everything. I wanted to go to the second level but ran out of time. I squeezed in the trip to Fort Mott and spent most of the time checking out the civil war artillery firing and hanging out with Andy Grant and Shawn Welch, then had to take off. There were places where I saw people but never had a chance to check out how they got there (eg. the kids in the pictures behind "bars")
