Araw ng Kagitingan 2002,
the 60th year of commemoration of the Fall of Bataan.
On my second year as battalion commander, I endeavored to collaborate with the local government of Bataan to launch a parallel project that would prop up the 2002 Araw ng Kagitingan through a weeklong activity called 'Paggunita sa Kabayanihan' from 3 to 8 april 2002. The component of this project was a Military Vehicle Show (2nd year) and motorcade, a photo exhibit, a scale model exhibit and a film showing.
The nightly film showing showcased old Hollywood movies 'Bataan' and 'Back to Bataan' in five (5) poblacions of five (5) towns of Bataan. Prof. Silvestre even made a water color poster for the said side event.
I also borrowed Japanese uniforms from my friend, Takashi 'Mike' Fukuda who is a military history enthusiast. He is married to a Kapampangan and has been a long time resident of Angeles City, Pampanga.
My soldiers finally got the needed webbings through the Battling Bastards of Bataan when a donation of 34 pairs of authentic khaki Leggings and reproduction khaki cartridge belts. They were featured prominently in the commemoration at Camp O'Donnell, Capas, Tarlac when they were utilized as firing detail during the American veterans' wreath laying ceremony. I was truly amazed because I only heard 3 volley shots, the firing precision was perfect. We rehearsed using blank ammo about 3 times some days earlier.
This activity was done 5 years ago and I still dream of doing another one in the future. I hope you could be of help.
