I'm still working on it mind, so please be kind! Some shots from last year's 'Victorian Valentines' party where I got to wear my Zulu Wars 24th Foot uniform: Early Work in Progress Photo (no belt or shoulder numbers yet) At the Victorian Valentines No she's not my date Atmospheric shot in the old walled city of Intramuros The impromptu and unscripted swordfight In time I hope to be able to recreate C/Sgt Frank Bourne of Rorke's Drift fame who, unlike the famous Nigel Green impression in Zulu, was a mere 24 years old at the time of the battle and was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for his actions defending the post. www.rorkesdriftvc.com/defenders/bourne.htm"All right... nobody told you to stop workin'!" Very nice Tom. Where was this at? It looks like Casa Manila.

Yup, that's Casa Manila. I probably had the only discernable Victorian era costume there, almost everyone else was vampire gothic or in that ludicrous Granado Espada hodgepodge which doesn't know what era it wants to be. It was quite lovely, though, the venue and all. What was also cool was the security personnel were dressed in Rayadillos, albeit Philippine Revolutionary style ones instead of Spanish native regimentals. Yes the sabre and medal shouldn't technically be there - the medal perhaps. I'm thinking I might get one of those 'bobby' style helmets and modify it into a home service helmet for this. But of course the big ticket item which I can only dream about at this point would be the Martini-Henry... BOURNE: "It's a miracle." CHARD: "If it's a miracle Colour Sergeant, it's a short chamber Boxer Henry, point 45 caliber miracle." BOURNE: "... and a bayonet sir... with some guts be'ind it." Tom

Well done Tom. It sort of reminds me of the time I was "reenacting" as a Filipino military observer with Lord Chelmsford's chaps. ;D Was that Mr. Eric Quizon you were having a duel with? For Victorian era home service you could get yourself a glengarry like what these good lads next to me were wearing. It won't hurt the pockets as much as a bobby hat.

Oh! That is lovely!! I kind of took the opposite tack for mine - escort to the British military attache to Manila circa 1880.
He's not Eric Quizon as far as I know but I do know he's in showbiz. He's part of the Philippine Highlander (as in Duncan McLeod) Society which were the co-hosts of the event. We had a three way swordfight - Ranulf, whatsisname and myself - which was utterly unscripted and quite a surprise for me as the guy who was supposed to do the swordfight showed up VERY late (like when it was about done) and I happened to be there with a sabre.
Aye, a Glengarry would do quite well - I'm due to cut my hair pretty soon anyways (it's ponytail length right now - I grew it because of the character I regularly play, Commodore Norrington from Pirates of the Caribbean, as well as assorted 18th century characters. I wasn't able to get a decent wig until recently) so I should be able to wear a post 18th century uniforms without having to worry about the hair.
Salutes, Tom

Casa Manila at night in "olden times" impressions... Casa Manila is notorious for its hauntings. I attended a formal dinner function there in 1991. My date and I wandered into the second floor balcony to enjoy the sights where there were doors to unused rooms. Something heavy fell inside one of the empty rooms. I thought it was weird because it was dark and nobody should could have been there. I didn't think much of it (it could have been a stray cat that got in there since the place is semi-open air courtyard type). A week later I read in one of the Sunday paper magazines an article on the different hauntings that happen at .... tadaa.. Casa Manila.

Hehe... we were wandering around near the area in costume actually, half hoping to freak some unsuspecting passers by out, being in Victorian style costume and all...
Well it's certainly the place for it!

Thanks very much BravoTwoZero! I fear that it's something I'll never be cured of - my love for British military history and costume. You and your good lady look simply smashing by the way and I do regret not being able to meet up with you guys at Fort Mac - you were there right, with the Philippine Scouts? I was in my Guardia Civil Veterana de Manila impression.
I only wish there were more events like this back home - one other Victorian era impression I've been wanting to do is that of the national hero hehehe... I'll be grabbing a bowler while I'm here ;-)
Salutes, Tom

I do regret not being able to meet up with you guys at Fort Mac - you were there right, with the Philippine Scouts? Too bad we didn't get to meet. Here's Kristy and me at the Fort Mac event. We will be at the Marching Through History event. Maybe we'll get to see you there.

Nice one Tom...Looking at your pics...the more I missed, "my Maynila...."
B20, I envy you, I just hope I can convince my wife to join me in my reenactment. I can't wait for my little angel to grow up so that she can join me as "Angel of Bataan"...

Thanks :-) I'm trying to get a variety of uniforms finished so I can attend a variety of events. Sadly, my girlfriend really doesn't like WW2 or most other eras - she'll go with Pride and Prejudice era (Napoleonic) but most of all 18th century era if ever she comes with me, so it's mostly pirate events with me.
When I get home though, I'm going to be working with my 13 year old ward to get a Zulu War impression - Zulu vs British - fight sequence going!

79th Foote! 'ere mi lad, yer impressions should have been there at the now defunct annual Royal Tournament.
Sadly, The last ever royal tournament closed on the 2 August 1999 after the labour party decided it would be a good cost cutting measure in the 1998 Strategic Defence Review.
The Sword & the Bayonet.
Kings Troop, Royal Horse Arty.
the 1993 finale.

Congrates on uniform! It is not a Glengarry you need but a pill box hat as glengarries were worn only by Scottish regts. me-lad! some regts began to wear the forage cap. Rouke was in a Welsh, not Scots regt. ok. there is an English reenactment group called "The Diehards" on the web under Brit. reenactment soc.s & groups. They have won cup etc in Britain for best reenactors, best drill etc. The West Surrey Regt. got that nickname "Diehards". they number about 20 plus, each member has full kit and Remingtons . They were invited to S. Africa to do a Spien Kopfe event on S.A. TV. after the Zulu War commemoration event. Get in touch with them, their great lads! I've got a khaki helmet 1900 pattern at home. It's from Pinewood Studios (film & TV) just N. of London. When not in Pampanga I live in my house in hackney E. London. I plan to blanco it white for gen Lawton at an event to commemorate the Battle of San Mateo. In 2010 it will be 111yrs old, and a good chance to organize something. The Diehards F.T. jackets are white I believe--- Thinks Spanish Vols in support of the "Tiradores"?? What a dream! I was in the English Civil War Soc. for many years, Lt.of Aurther Lord Capel's Ft. Regt. & still in the Austro-hungarian 6th Grenzer Regt. ( English Comp.) May be I get to see you next time in Manila. Thanks to you I now have a great photo of a N. machinegun. Salamat! Insurrectomad

Hi there!
I researched the uniform on the RorkesDriftVC site and with Ospreys as well. The little pins on the uniform were ordered from the Royal Regiment of Wales website - I was doing a little play on Dr.Livingston in the Serengeti and I made the 'bad guy' a renegate 'Man who would be King' type who's trying to claim the New York Times reward for whoever can find Dr.Livingston first. So I got the uniform together. I just need to finish the straps, make up an Oliver water bottle and put together a spring airsoft Martini Henry (and a bayonet, with some guts behind it!) and I'm done!

Working on making repros of the leather webbing and pack and I'm modifying one of these plastic airsofts into a workable Martini Henry. I also hope to get a costume together for a Zulu Warrior for my buddy Evan to wear (though I MIGHT have him wearing a looted redcoat from the Isandhlwana battlefield or something so he's not too 'sexy' :-P )
I'm also working on a modern Coldstream Guards uniform - if I can find an airsoft L85A1 that would be good.
