President leads Independence Day rites at Luneta

President Arroyo leads today the Independence Day rites at the Rizal Park in Manila to commemorate the 110th anniversary of Philippine Independence.
Mrs. Arroyo will unveil the Philippine Flag Marker in front of the Independence Day Flag Pole at the Rizal Park before 7 a.m. today, Thursday, after which will follow the flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremonies.
Mrs. Arroyo will deliver a message at the opening of Sentro K3 (Kaisahan, Kagalingan, at Kalayaan ng Bayan) at Plaza San Lorenzo Ruiz also in Rizal Park.
At the opening of Sentro K3, activities like jobs fairs, sports and cultural events, medical assistance missions, technology transfer seminars and demonstration, agri-aqua fairs and exhibits will be held.
In the evening, Mrs. Arroyo will host foreign diplomats and other officials in a vin d’honneur at Malacañang.
The government will limit fanfare during this year’s Independence Day celebrations to give way for more free services like health and employment services to the people in commemoration of Philippine Independence.
Similar Independence Day rites will be held throughout the country, especially in historic places like Kawit, Cavite, and Dapitan City in Zamboanga del Norte.
Mrs. Arroyo issued an Independence Day Message citing her administration’s efforts to uphold human rights and democracy, and improve the economy.
"We have tackled our unfortunate legacy of political violence whether it is in the Philippines or abroad with foreign leaders and human rights organizations. We have met a lot of success since the formation of what was to become the Melo Commission. Extrajudicial killings are down and prosecutions are up. We will not be satisfied until we are at zero, but we are making progress," she said.
The Chief Executive will officially unveil the Philippine Flag marker that chronicles the origin of the national flag at 6:55 a.m.
The President will be assisted by the officials of the June 12 inter-agency task force headed by Secretary Jesli Lapus of the Department of Education (DepEd); Gen. Alexander Yano, Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines; Director General Avelino T. Razon Jr., chief of the Philippine National Police; and Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim for the flag-raising ceremony. Afterwards, the President will proceed to the Rizal National Monument for the wreath-laying ceremony.
National Historical Institute Chairman Lamberto R. Ocampo will give the welcome remarks at the Tanghalang Sentro K3, Plaza San Lorenzo Ruiz.
Secretary Lapus, this year’s chairman of the Kalayaan 2008 Inter Agency Task Force. will introduce the President.

The 28 cabinet secretaries will lead the flag raising and wreathlaying ceremonies from Regions 1 to ARMM and will open the Sentro K. Delivery of government services nationwide.
Meanwhile, the police said all areas leading to north and southbound lane of Katigbak st. to T. M. Kalaw st. will be closed to traffic at 6 a.m. today.
Vehicles traveling northwards along Roxas Blvd. are advised to turn right at T.M. Kalaw then turn left to Ma. Orosa and onward to destination.
Vehicles traveling southbound coming from Del Pan Bridge-Pier zone must turn left to P. Burgos, right to Ma. Orosa onward to their destination.

As part of the national government’s efforts to highlight the vital role of local heroes in the attainment of the country’s freedom, Interior and Local Government Secretary Ronaldo Puno and other Cabinet Secretaries with the support of local officials, non-government organizations and other concerned sectors will simultaneously lead the commemorative Independence Day rites in the different regions of the country today in celebration of the 110th anniversary of the proclamation of Philippine Independence.
At the same time, local government units nationwide are expected to conduct flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremonies and other commemorative activities in places of national significance in their respective areas on the same day as part of their Independence Day program with the theme "Republic Service, Tungo sa Ganap na Kalayaan at Kaunlaran."
Metro Manila local government units will also attend the flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremonies at the Rizal National Monument in Manila at 7 a.m. today, followed by public service activities of national government agencies at the Sentro K3 (Kaisahan, Kagalingan at Kalayaan ng Bayan) in front of the Quirino Grandstand.
On May 28, local chief executives throughout the country held fitting ceremonies in observance of the National Flag Day with the theme, "Igalang ang Ating Watawat, Sa Isip, Sa Salita at Sa Gawa," which served as the kick-off ceremony for the 2008 Independence Day celebration. The activity included the simultaneous ringing of church bells, fog horns and flag raising ceremonies.
From May 15 to June 30, government buildings, schools, hospitals, public parks, restaurants, hotels, department stores, malls, banks and major roads and thoroughfares have started displaying and gave reverence to the Philippine Flag.
Puno, who shall lead the program of activities in Pikit, North Cotabato with other officials, will underscore the critical role of Datu Uto in the Muslim resistance against Spanish rule in mainland Mindanao .Datu Uto, officially known as Sultan Anwarud-din-Uto, rose to prominence in the 1860s when he led the rebellion that proved to be the main hindrance to Spanish domination in Mindanao during the period.
Puno said Datu Uto’s strong defiance against Spanish rule awakened the spirit of freedom in the hearts of every Mindanaoan which sowed the seeds of the Himagsikan and eventually led to the country’s liberty in 1896.
"As we celebrate our country’s Independence, we should honor and recognize the significant contributions of this great Muslim leader who valiantly fought for his people and his country against foreign aggression," he said. (Elena L. Aben)

ANGELES CITY - The Philippines first Independence Day anniversary originally celebrated here in 1899 by Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo will be reenacted at the historic Pamintuan Mansion here today with former Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan as guest of honor and speaker.
The mansion. located at the corner of Miranda and Sto. Entierro streets here now occupied by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas will be open to the public during the Independence Day Celebration.
Shortly after the reenactment, visitors will march to the Museo Ning Angeles where free services will be conducted by various government agencies.
Pamintuan, now secretary of the Subic-Clark Alliance for Development Council (SCAD), said that today’s Freedom Day activities will include civic-military motorcade around the city’s principal streets, flagraising ceremony, and speech by Mayor Francis Nepomuceno.
Some of the free services to be conducted the whole day at the Museo Ning Angeles include legal assistance for land reform farmers by the Department of Agrarian Reform, procedures and assistance on the registration of motor vehicles and renewal of driver’s licenses by the Land Transportation Office, information on how to apply and secure passports by the Department of Foreign Affairs, steps on how to apply and secure clearances from the police and the National Bureau of Investigation, free medical consultations, haircut, manicure, pedicure and massage, distribution of free seedlings and plants and a mini job fair.
Independence Day in Angeles City started since last Tuesday at the Nepo Quadrangle with various activities like peace street demonstrations and parade of colorful floats from different barangays and schools in the city.
The neighboring City of San Fernando also has prepared for a bigger and colorful celebration for today.
Mayor Oscar Rodriguez said that activities in the city will include a civic-military parade to be joined by various colorful floats from many places in the city, playing of brass bands from Camp Olivas and the local city hall , Philippine Air Forced headquarters in Floridablanca town and confetti drop by a PAF helicopter.
