There was an event this Saturday at the Fort MacArthur Museum. It is called "The Great Los Angeles Air Raid". Here is the poster: Check out the link www.ftmac.org for more information. Teddy Ortega and Philip Garcia volunteered for this event. I on the other hand was a paying guest. This was an excellent opportunity for me to combine my two passions: swing dancing and interest in history. Here are the pictures from the event: 1940s civilian vehicles Plus other World War II era military vehicles and equipment Philip, Teddy and I took this opportunity to wear World War II US uniforms and pose with the vehicles Since my goal was to swing dance, I donned my class A uniform with the insignia of the 442nd Infantry Division. Here's a closer shot. I also posed with the Bofors Anti-aircraft gun. Here are some pictures of others wearing period uniforms. I specially liked this pretty blonde wearing a nurse's uniform. Here are more shots of the three of us with another vehicle (it was already getting dark). Here's Teddy when he joined the other sentries by the entrance. I posed with two other guys, we represented three distinct military branches. The US Army Air Corps, The Navy and The Infantry. The event formally started at around 7:00PM. Here is a picture of the Master of Ceremonies, Maxwell DeMille and the representative of Fort MacArthur, John Cannaster (he joins us on some of our Philippine Scout events) Here is the Jonathan Stout orchestra (dancing to live music makes it a lot more fun!) And their featured vocalist, Hillary Alexander. The dancefloor Look for me here. Here we are after the band's performance. She's a friend of mine, her name is Jenny. Ahhh...dancing is so much fun! Me with Ashlee... Some performance from the Bobby Sox Brigade. Then an interruption, with a mock air raid. Back to some more dancing. A pair of world class swing dancers here, Mike and Kasey, dressed up in period civilian garb. And posing with some of my friends. It was quite cold that evening. I'm surprised with the women and their spaghetti strapped dresses! For me, the wool uniform helped a bit but the dancing made me sweat big time. It was a lot of fun. I'm going to have to join this event again next year.

Sweet! Looks like a blast. Thanks for the pictures.
Did they play Moonlight Serenade and were you able to slowdance to it with a partner? That alone to me makes the whole night worth it. (sigh)

Bataan sunset over looking the Pacific ocean. Party grounds. Teddy and I set up, cleaned all the table and chairs in the morning. The Swing band! I took swing lesson and ended up on perimeter guard duty! The ma deuce blasting away at enemy Jap planes in the night sky! Just incredible! The guy next to me blasted into the sky his Thompson and two other guys. The Scouts cars were also firing away their 30's. Love it! reminded me of the film 1941! They first annouce that possible enemy planes were seen by radar. And next they played real loud aircraft engines and all light were closed then the Anti Aircaft guns all opened up in the night sky and then the fire works extravaganza followed. Scout cars with the 34th Infantry that help man the Fort during the day the Air Raid. www.geocities.com/soldierboy35th/EARLYWAR.htmlSee you all there next year! I will be joining the Dance next time ! ;D Great photos Joseph! Thanks for showing! Philip

Greetings Gentlemen,
Great pictures Joseph! It looks like you guys had a lot of fun. I really like the pictures especially the pictures with you guys beside the scout car. Looks almost vintage except for the out of sync people in the background. Nice pictures too Philip. Did you intentionally jar the shot with the scout car against the sunset? Liked the that picture.
Thank you guys for sharing your pictures.

Me too I love that shot of the sunset and the soldier silhouettes. It could be a movie poster shot! "Scout Car of Our Fathers" I think the slight blur was not intentional though. It's a very common side effect of taking a slow exposure no-flash shot. The motion of pressing the shutter produces that slight blur (unless the camera is on a tripod and a timer is used to take the shot).

Sweet! Looks like a blast. Thanks for the pictures. Did they play Moonlight Serenade and were you able to slowdance to it with a partner? That alone to me makes the whole night worth it. (sigh) It was a lot of fun! But nope, they didn't play Moonlight Serenade. Typically, when you're swing dancing you want fast tempo music. I actually feel that it's a let down when slow music is played on a swing dance floor. Don't get me wrong though, Moonlight Serenade is among my favorite tunes, but I'd rather dance fast. The picture I have cheek-to-cheek with Ashlee was more of a posed shot. I saw the camera aimed at us, then we posed. After that we went back to the fast dancing.

Great pics Bravotwozero! Say, your lady friend wouldn't by any chance be interested in portraying a volunteer for the Bataan-Corregidor U.S. Army Nursing Corps during any of our reenactments? All she needs is a daisymae floppy hat, an HBT serge green overalls, and a red cross armband. You can play a shell-shocked soldier under her intensive care! ;D

Check out the gangster looking guy in the dark fedora on the left. Was he there to reenact the Los Angeles air raid or the Zoot suit riots?

Thanks for the new photos. Are those dummy drill 1903's or are they real without the slings?

Greetings Philip,
Wow! Some more great pictures. Great event. You've got a great group there. Everyone looks very authentic and well equiped. Maybe you can try doing some early world war two action shots with them. Fort MacArthur looks like a good backdrop plus they have the vehicles and weapons. You can start your coffee table book. What do you think?

Hi milspec, Thanks for enjoying the pics. All of those guys were Fort mac voulnteers and Teddy and I just added in to their group. As we are originally still into reenacting Filipino soldiers of WWII. yes I wish we could get this many pinoys to join our Philippine historical group. As we are trying to put together a Bataan battle at Fort Mac but we are badly in need of Pinoy's to join the group first.

Hey aren't they going to show footages from the Great Los Angeles Raid on the episode of Mail Call today? I checked the description and there's no mention of it. However they probably will show it since the description of today's episode says they're in San Pedro, CA.
------------ Mail Call : SS Lane Victory: #70. Airs on Friday March 30 06:30 PM
R. Lee Ermey is underway in San Pedro, California onboard the SS Lane Victory--the only fully operational WWII-era victory ship in the world. Lee highlights the role of the Merchant Marine and Navy Armed Guard in WWII and how they formed the vital link between "Rosie the Riveter" and "GI Joe"--shipping millions of tons of materiel and supplies across the Atlantic and Pacific. To demonstrate the ship's role, Lee and his jeep are sealifted by a WWII-era crane from shore onto the ship. From the anti-aircraft gun mount on the SS Lane Victory, the Gunny introduces a story about SWORDS, the military's new fully-armed robot warrior that is being deployed on the battlefield right now. And Lee takes a look back to the Navajo Code Talkers--Native Americans who developed an unbreakable secret code to keep radio communications safe during WWII.

Mail Call EPISODE : 93
Airs on Friday April 13 10:00 PM Airs on Saturday April 14 02:00 AM
Shot on location in San Diego, California at the Strategic Operations Training Center, R. Lee Ermey answers viewer questions about the military with practical demonstrations in the field. Lee gets in a little trigger time training with a group of "insurgents" in an "Iraqi Village" at the most realistic training facility used by the U.S. Marine Corps. Then witness the guns and gear used by the British Red Coats against the American rebels during our War of Independence. Go with Lee on an in-depth tour of the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command, dedicated to finding and the remains of all missing and unidentified service men and women.
Finally, take a trip to Fort MacArthur in Long Beach, California to re-enact the great L.A. Air Raid of 1942.
( Video taped last year) So were not included in this one.
