I saw Once Before I Die yesterday...
I didn't know what to make out of the movie itself. I found myself saying "huh?" a lot. The cavalrymen were okay.
I like the unspoiled Philippine countryside and scenery.

I was finally able to set aside 2 straight hours to watch The Real Glory. It's an excellent movie considering it was made in 1939. Thanks Philip for lending the video to me. I'll send it back soon with some goodies for you.

Greetings Gentlemen, This is a great topic. Have you guys heard or seen the movie "The Dawn of Freedom"? It was a WWII Japanese propaganda movie made in the Philippines after the surrender of the USAFFE. The plot simply involved this young boy asking his brother, who going off to fight the japanese during start of the war, to bring back the helmet of the enemy as a souvenir. The Americans were portrayed as gangsters and the Japanese as liberators. So you guessed it the big brother brought back a doughboy (WWI) helmet to his younger brother. The best part of the movie is when they used captured uniforms, M3 Stuart tanks and M3 HalfTracks which were armed with the french 75mm anti tank gun. I saw a grainy black and white copy a long long time ago. I don't remember when and where. I don't know who the actors were. My grandparents don't remember seeing it. I guess they had other better things to do. I believe it didn't do to well in the box office either(back in 1943). I wonder if there are other or better copies exist. I would like to see it again. Have a great weekend! Milspec Gentlemen... I just found this movie on ebay. It will be a while before I receive and watch it since the seller doesn't accept Paypal so I'm sending a personal check. I'll try to post some screenshots when I get it. I'm looking forward to watching this Japanese propaganda film. It's another film set in the Philippines during that era. I'll ask the seller if he makes more copies. It's not copyrighted I don't think. If I'm not mistaken, the seller just makes copies to sell.

I haven't watched the whole thing yet because of a busy home life. I've seen the first 10 minutes or so. A couple of minutes of another old Filipino movie was taped over near the beginning but nothing crucial to the story. I haven't seen all of the movie yet but it's still good to have as a historical piece. I saw up to the part where the kid asked his brother for the "enemy's helmet" before he left. I'm glad to have found it on ebay and to have informed you guys of its availability.

I saw an hour of the movie already. It's kind of cheesy actually with some bad acting and blatant propaganda. Like nothing is subtle. It's all about "Japanese=friend, American=enemy" type of message that it sends haha! What can you expect?
The visuals of Manila and the people and the soldiers' gears are the real deal though. What you see is what Manila looked in that era.
The quality is not all that great but I wasn't expecting it to be. There are parts that distorts like a TV with bad tracking or reception.
I'm still glad I learned about that movie from this forum and actually found one on ebay.

Greetings Victor,
I just wanted to ask about the quality of the transfer. Are the equipment and weapons clearly visible and identifiable. Like when you say that you can identify an M1910 vs an M1928 Haversack or the M1910 cartridge belt vs an M1923. Are the images muddled or diffuse like 1920s or 1930s movies or are they as sharp as 1940s-1950s movies. Is it more newsreel type quality vs cinematic quality. The one I saw in the Philippines had poor resolution. It was almost like watching shadows, there was hardly any in between shades of gray to draw out details. I hope you can share the details that you observed from the movie. How would you grade the quality of the film transfer if for example the "Back to Bataan" DVD was a 10?

No it's not THAT clear. It's watchable but it has a lot of shaky segments. It is diffused like 30's movies and more newsreel. There are some good segments but quality is not good. I'm not sure if we have the same standards but I would rate this a 5 or 6 compared to Back to Bataan.
That being said, to me it's still worth the purchase simply because it's a rare collector's item. Everything is also from the era, not recreated 20 years later. The helmets they used were the real deal instead of movie production repros. They were probably the same ones they recovered from the battlefields. The Manila they showed was the pre 1945 devastated Manila.
I was able to identify 1910 haversacks by the shape of the meat can pouch. You can't tell between a 1910 or 1923 belts. The PS actors used 1917 rifles. The Stuart tanks looked real (of course they're probably the exact same ones that fought in Bataan!)
Even though the master copy's quality is poor and it's a Japanese propaganda film, in a way it's a good glimpse into that time period.

I might end up buying this DVD as well. I noticed the seller is from right here in the DC area so perhaps I can save money on postage if we do an actual in person exchange. Plus I can get to ask him about what other historical goodies he has

Greetings Victor,
Is the movie available in DVD as Yamota mentioned? I was wondering if it is since I thought that it was only on VHS and I no longer have a VHS player. Let me take a look at the screen shots and see the quality of the film you got.

There is a new documentary coming out by December 2007 entitled 'DeathMarch' made by the director who made Angels of Bataan and Siege of Corregidor. I managed to get copies on ebay.com. I heard that this new film tells the story of the POW's and what happened during their 9 day march to San Fernando Railway station and then to Camp O'Donell and Camp Cabanatuan. Will keep all members updated.

There is a guy that is selling the Movie "Dawn of Freedom" on VHS and/or DVD. He does not take PayPal, only checks, but he did send the film. The quality is about a 50% to 80% and the films jumps around alot. I am glad that I purchased the film and it does not cost much, only $12.95 and he pays the shipping if you are prior Military, Police, Emergency personnel & Electric Linemen! Check it out. He even sends a copy of the booklet of the film, when it came out. You can't beat that!!
