He is survived by his loving wife Dolores Quilla Benson. Beloved father of Lisa Castro, father-in-law of Gerry Castro. Grandfather of Camille, Jade & Jordan Castro and Michael, Arnold, Jr. & Michelle Benson. He has now joined his two sons John Benson, Jr. and Arnold Benson in heaven. Also the father of Roland (Pining), Rostum (Luz), Romeo (Susan) & Rosario Benson; Grandfather & Great Grandfather to all their children. John and Dolores Quilla were happily married for 51 years. John was a true hero. He served in the U.S. Army, and during his service he was a P.O.W., survived the Bataan Death March, World War II & Korean War. He received the Combat Infantry Medal of Honor, and the distinguished Purple Heart. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 714 in San Jose and retired from the U.S. Postal Service. John spent most of his life in San Francisco and made numerous friends. He will be missed by all. His family would like to extend their thanks to the Veterans SF Hospital staff, the CLC staff and Anthony Blackard for their wonderful and caring support for John during his illness. Viewing and Rosary will be at Valente Marini Perata & Co. Mortuary, 4840 Mission St., SF Wed, Aug 24, 4pm - 9pm; Thurs, Aug 25, 9am - 9pm with a Rosary Thurs, Aug 25 at 7pm. There will be a mass on Fri, Aug 26 at 10:30am at St. Augustine Church, 3700 Callan Blvd, SSF with burial following the mass at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, 1500 Old Mission Rd, Colma.
