After we were talking about our own alternate history versions of the Philippines on the other thread I came across this anime (my fiancee and I are anime addicts - well she is and I became one):
The scenario is, what if a modern high-tech Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force Aegis destroyer was mysteriously sent back into the past just after the Battle of Midway? With their weaponry they outclass virtually every ship afloat at the time but because they desire to return to their own time and their own families they desperately do not want to change the future - but at the same time they are aware of the suffering Japan went through in WW2 (and the excesses of the military leadership, which I was very surprised to see them acknowledge!! It wasn't just 'Japan did no wrong' in this anime, they actually make it obvious that there were 'bad guys' who led the country to war - something that their ideals as modern Japanese in the 'Self-Defense Force' stand in stark contrast to) so there is the temptation to fight against the Americans as well.

Yeah, it sounds very similar to "The Final Countdown" (cue music) but since it's a series it actually allows the characters a lot more depth and thoughtfulness than the American film really showed. The characters are pretty well thought out and I really liked how they were allowed to be themselves instead of being handpuppets of the director who wanted to make a point.
I wish we could do something like that... maybe I should get back to writing that Skycaptain & The World of Tomorrow inspired alternate history Philippines again, hehehe...
