Finally At last Osprey has made an effort to recognize the SCOUTS! And they should even do another one on the whole Philippine Division! We should bombard them with request to have the PS made! I just hope their Illustrations and info are accurate! Lawrence thanks for this great info! "Strength is our Loyalty" Philip

I just received this book today. The cover art is also inside in landscape and you can see more of it. However the more I look at it, the more I'm convinced the artist used Philip's 1/6 scale cavalryman as a model. We know that Philip's work has some inaccuracies for lack of the available correct 1/6 scale parts to use (eg. gas mask, boots). If you do a search on the 26th Cavalry on google images, most likely Philip's excellent quality photo of his 1/6 model will appear. The artist painted the same exact inaccuracies. The write-up about the last charge is not entirely accurate either. It only said that it was made by a platoon of Troop F (instead of Troop E-F). It also stated that Ed Ramsey was the CO of Troop F, not Capt. Wheeler. But hey it's a cavalry book with the 26th on the cover to boot... looking forward to reading about all the other cavalry units.

Now that you discovered the similarity, It's a shame considering he got the photo from the PSHS website. And use the the new updated version of John Solie's painting as reference too. As Research is so important in recreating history that's why even John Solie's painting needed to be corrected. With all the available info and photos even ebay is a great source for reference on very common US army gear like the mask bag. Did not seek advise from at least PSHS forum and Vets and how difficult is it to even find our forum these days with all the info here? Col Ramsey who I consulted on my figure clearly pointed out that the PS enlistedmen only wore the high laced boots in his first seeing my work in progress figure. Until now I believe there is no 1/6 scale high laced boots available in this hobby. Until of course the 1/6 manufacturers come out with an accurate 26th Cav. PS figure. Would love to see that figure made. ;D thanks for the feedback on the Osprey book, will still get this issue. Philip

Hi Rudy, Never had a chance to fix the scabbard postion, but I was able to make other changes, wool shirt, added a bolo knife/ scabbard, and correct gas mask bag. I even changed the horse to a correct 1/6 scale and has the closes looking skin texture on it. Never had a chance to photo it. Philip

It sounds like you have a budding cavalryman on your hands!!! Now you have to buy THREE horses--one for your impression, and one each for your son and daughter!
I was actually kind of bummed out by the book. Roughly one page of text on the 26th Cav--any of us would have had a hard time summarizing the 26th's exploits in less than five.
I was also bothered by the lack of any primary sources. If he had just used Colonel Ramsey's memoirs, the author would have avoided many of the factual mistakes. His bibliography lists two excellent books, but that's still...two books.
On the bright side, Osprey recognizes the historic impact of Filipino forces during WWII. The door is now cracked for them to do a complete book on the Philippine Scouts, and a separate book on the Philippine Army.
Just my two cents, Matt

I urge you all to give feedback to Osprey Publication on the poorly research on the 26th Cav. on this book. Mentioned to them the website of the PSHS and it's forum, our forum pinoyhistory. You can sign up and then post them at their forum under WWII period, link below, www.ospreypublishing.com/forum/world_war_2/ In the home page section on the right column you can also add in to Osprey about the need for them to do one on the Philippine Division. And hopefully with enough feedback from all of us disappointed we could make them do a better book on the PS or at least revise their book in the near future with your comments and suggestion the publishers cannot ignore and see their is strong reaction to their first book about the scouts. Philip

It's that bad, huh? I wonder why they even bother publishing stuff that'll only embarrass them. I'll check out their forum.

Now that I had the chance to look at the book more closely, I think it's just mismatched expectations. We're simply expecting too much from it but the book is too thin and the topic too broad. It could not possibly cover all the cavalry units in different phases of the war in such a thin book. It's more like a "quick overview" type of treatment. I still believe though that since the 26th Cavalry was the only unit to fight on horseback during the way, that it should have had an extra page or two in the book.
We could always make our own book. Collectively, we probably have more information and resources than any single author commissioned by Osprey to do research.

Can't agree more, Vic. In just a few years, this site has morphed into THE place to go to for P.S. info, even more so than philippine-scouts.org (all due respect to the maintainers of the latter, of course; plus, their focus is different)
You, Philip, Rayadillo and the other original members deserve the credit for the sustained hard work and dedication. *zipzef* Painom kayo! =)

Osprey is asking for suggestions for future titles. I put in my plug for a book on the Philippine Scouts. There are similar books on the Ghurkas and other similar units.
