A little belated but here's some shots from the April 2009 GWHS Spring Event at Ozena Valley: A compadre and I Some of the Allies And the ball begins... If you're interested, it's not too late to start getting ready for the Fall event. It should be either on the second or third weekend in November.

Nice shots! What did you blow up in that picture? What did you use?

We used six one-pound blank charges of black powder that were strategically placed in no-man's land and lit before the battle started. The dirt raining down on everyone provides a suitably period "feel" to things... ;D

Were the explosions to kick off the event or did you also have minor explosions at a safe distance as background confusion during the tactical?

We use the big explosions to kick off the event (that way, there's nobody in no man's land).

Even in WW1 the Yanks had a smarter cut uniform than the Brits. it seems! In the reenactments that I've attended where explosives are used they have been able to use them during the 'battles' at fairly close range. mostly behind a suitable screen such as a wrecked cart or upturned Jeep. a pit is made on other side from the crowd and the charge is covered in soot and powered chalk or flour. sometimes a steel tube of petrol is fused alongside it, to go off at the same time. next to that there is a pile of green brush or a burning tyre to keep a constant column of smoke going for duration of the event. Practice makes perfect as they say!-- David
