Greetings fellow members!
Sunday, 12th April 2009 I finally got to visit the most impressive display of WWII historical presentation display here in Singapore.
The first part of the slide presentation is at the Fort Canning hill were the British Malaya high command have their underground command bunker called by the British as"The Battle Box". On display with Life size wax maniquins and are audio animatronically operated. So it was an even more impressive light and sound show than the one at Fort Siloso.
The first two rooms we were not allowed to take photos.
The tour begins with the first room the "telephone exchange room" were I was first totally surprised came to "life". A British radio operator signalman, plugging in pulling out and plugging into another connection in a telephone operators exchange console. And he keep doing this during the whole show with voices of other units calling in and the operator trying to keep his cool of the madness going on. And followed up with a light and sound show of simulated "bombardment " of the bunker. Totally fooled and impressed.
The next two rooms were the telegraph operators rooms. We see a row of tables with chairs next to it and a row of telegraph operators equipment on them.
We are instructed to look into a floor mounted telescopic 3D lens viewer. And when the audio starts, hologram images of a filmed live action actors dressed as British communication operators starts appearing exactly on the chairs totally focused on maning the telegraphs. With a corporal walking around checking their messages they are retrieving. All this with audio recordings of them during the climatic last few days for the battle for Singapore. Again I was caught totally by surprised and truly great presentation for a Military historical Museum. It was light being brought back in time and eerily seeing ghostly apparitions of soldiers who manned the under ground bunkers with well presented dramatic dimly lit rooms and atmosphere.
The second part is from my visit at the Tunnels at Labrador Park and casemate bunkers. Not as spectacular like with the battle box, but still well maintained and had some very good set dressing props as exhibits. These were some of the coastal fortifications built by the British in 1886 overlooking the Singapore harbor to the right of Fort Siloso.
below is the slide show link:
