Hi Dan, I don't think the PS fought in San Miguel, Bulacan and knocked out those Japanese tanks. The 26th Cavalry was the only PS unit heavily engaged during the withdrawal and they were further west along highway 3 (Tarlac/Pampanga). Maybe elements of the 194th Tank Battalion were responsible for knocking those tanks. The 194th played a key role during the delaying action and often fought a cat and mouse tank to tank battle with the Japanese within barrios and towns. That being said, a similar action where Scouts knocked out a Japanese tank did happen. It was told to me by retired Capt. Felipe Fernandez. He was a cavalryman with the 26th. They had a hasty defensive roadblock set up at Binalonan. He was in charge of a machinegun platoon made up of men who weren't originally machinegunners. They were an adhoc group that he collected after they were almost routed by some Japanese tanks the previous night. Anyway, three Japanese tanks came down the road heading toward their roadblock. Fernandez's machinegunner opened up on the tanks. The lead tank stopped (to assess the situation?). While it was stopped, one of the cavalrymen crawled close to the tank and threw a molotov thingytail at it. The cavalrymen didn't have any antitank weapons except for a .50 cal machinegun mounted on a scout car but it wasn't around at that time. So the only thing they had were molotov thingytails. The trooper succeeded in burning the first tank. At this point, Fernandez's machinegun jammed because his gunner fired with very long bursts (he wasn't really a machinegunner remember?). Fernandez tried to extract the jammed cartridge for his gunner. While their machinegun was not firing, a Japanese from the second tank came out of the turret hatch and shot the trooper who burned the tank with a pistol. Fernandez's machinegunner who was holding the MG bolt back let go of it and slammed Fernandez's thumb. Mr. Fernandez lost his thumbnail. However the gun was already clear and his gunner was able to give covering fire so the Japanese ducked back into the turret. This enabled a couple of other troopers including the first sergeant to rescue Pvt. Juan Soria (the guy who knocked out the tank but was shot). Pvt Soria survived and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. The rest of the tanks figured out they couldn't survive without infantry so they turned back, leaving one burning tank behind. This is Capt Fernandez, telling one of our reenactor friends how it happened (taken at last May's Phil. Scout Heritage Society reunion) So it could make for an interesting diorama Good luck on your group.
