I finally shot my M1 today I have this grin that can't be wiped off my face. At 100 yards that target is SSSMALL! Well I did hit some black, but lots of white too. Overall not bad for a rack grade garand... not that I would know the difference. Things I learned: - Bring a bigger pair of binoculars! or a spotting scope. That ballgame pair of binoculars is a joke ;D - The M1's front sight is way fatter than the black of the target at 100 yards. I don't know how you can even hit the black at 200 yards. The free public state-run ranges here in PA have a 3 round limit in the magazine. So I had to feed the clip and rounds a little awkwardly. This one time I pushed the clip and 3 rounds in too deep without a round getting chambered by the bolt. There was no round in the chamber when I pulled the trigger. I had to rack the bolt once more to load Here's a video:smg.photobucket.com/albums/v477/jvsv/Living_History/Videos/?action=view¤t=mygarand.flv

Hey Victor:
I will be the first to tell you that is great shooting, considering you did not use sand bags or a rifle rest like I see everyone else using.. I myself like open iron sights no scopes if possible.
Next time rest it and then adjust your sight. Good black but was that after the white and adjustment??
10X my man next time.
Nice picture you posted/ Haha

Thanks Yes I had to adjust the windage. We could make out the hits on the white part using our puny binoculars. I adjusted the windage and couldn't see any hits anymore. I wasn't sure if I was hitting anything at all until an old man with his grandson offered to spot it for us. He had a spotting scope. He told us I did hit the black. There were ten lanes. One guy had that sled rifle rest. I guess that's what you use for zeroing, takes the human error out of the equation. There was an SKS, two AR15's on the firing line... and a whole bunch of bolt action hunting rifles. It's deer season over here. I had the only garand and it drew a lot of comments like "I love that rifle" and "I love that ping sound" 10X next time!

Whoaaa Vic, it's the real thing now! I bet you wouldn't want to use the airsoft again... Actually, I need to go the the range myself. It's been several months since I've shot those paper targets, and besides I need to try that Arisaka type 99 I showed you during your visit. Happy and Safe shooting man!

Don
Where are you getting that ammo? Be careful shooting that rifle. Have you had it checked out?

At least it's not a Last Ditch arisaka Don, sure I'd still plink with the airsoft M1... because that one I can shoot in the basement

Went to the range again. Probably last one till spring. Not sure if this qualifies as 10x. While there are groupings inside the diamond, there are some wayward shots outside the target area ;D I still can't get over how small the target is at 100 yards.

Also for those that do have an M1 (and this will probably work for M1903's and M1917's) are marksmanship training videos from WW2. Really helpful and authentic ;D www.archive.org/details/Rifle_Marksmanship_with_M1_Rifle_Part_1

Ray Ortega in blue denim fatigue uniform worn in the Philippine Islands by USAFFE forces.
Ray fired the basic rifle qualification course at 200 yard range to get familiar with the shooting positions and M1 Garand for a later qualification shoot.
10 rounds standing slow fire. 10 rounds sitting rapid fire 10 rounds prone rapid fire (reduced target) 20 rounds prone slow fire (reduced target)
It was raining and overcast, so there was no fire danger...

My goodness... sorry Ray. I mistook you for Frank. Can you tell I wasn't looking at the face but at the rifle? Now if you had been shooting an M1917... I'd have done a double-take and looked at the face to see who it really was

Well Rudy, I was trying to get too comfortable to suck it in, ha, ha, ;D
I actually brought my M03 but the screw to the sight adjustment went missing so I had to borrow an M1. Frank lent me his gloves as well as the jacket.
Yeah sure, I'll take you up on that shooting jacket offer. e-mail me the price and other deatils, O.K.?

Latest trip to the range with the garand. Need to practice but at least now I know it's zero'ed. I hit black at 100 yards using a Caldwell gun rest (like a sandbag). I had the 100 yard targets set up like this: I just printed the targets. They're official SR-1 size but on 8.5"x11" copy paper. With these makeshift targets, if they're off the sheet, I won't know where they hit. Sighting in at 50 yards Trial standing off-hand no sling at 50 yards

Better enjoy the "fat" front sight blade of the M1 while you can! That M1903 front sight blade (as you will find out!, hint, hint!) is a different story!!

Well I had my very first CMP match today. I didn't think I'd completely miss the circle three times! My one complete miss in the standing off-hand was when I wasn't set breathingwise yet but my trigger squeeze on my loaner garand got ahead of me. It went off before I could get set with holding my breath. As soon as it went off I knew the shot was bad. I did better in the standing off hand than the prone rapid fire. I've never ever done the rapid fire even in practice. That was my absolute first time to do it and I was too concerned that the 70 seconds would run out before I could finish shooting. Looking back I realize I didn't have my breathing and squeezing in rhythm. I had two shots totally outside the circle, boo... I was also using my Wiley X tactical glasses as my shooting glasses. It has a full seal around the eyes and it was 85 degrees out. It kept on fogging up! But I had a blast! (pun intended) Anyway, here's my scorecard:
