Splendid!! These are quite a find :-)
As per Agmohio's site, the native regimentos fijos in the Philippines had hat bands with the regimental name on them - for example the group that shot Rizal, the 70th Regimento de Magallanes, would have one that read Regto 70 or something on it.
Many thanks for sharing these! Tom

Great pics! I especially like those "de cuartel, de marcha, de gala" shots. First time I've seen "Now this is how they looked/where/when" shots when applied to pre-revolutionary Spanish troops. I'll be hoarding all these. What's the story behind the coffee-table book? Attic or rare-book store find?
Thanks!

Amazing stuff! There's enough material there to keep everyone busy for years analyzing and debating. ;D
To me, the whole colonial period from 1860-1898 is a blank slate and the pictures are simply amazing. I wonder if any examples of the original uniforms and equipment survive anywhere today.

I agree. I keep looking at the pictures and trying to super-impose in my mind how it would have looked on that day in color. Definitely mesmerizing windows into the past.

Wow, are those the same blockhouses that surrounded Manila? I saw some pictures of blockhouses around Sta. Mesa area, they look nothing like those above.

1 agree, a great find and a "Must= Have" from my collection. I was given a book of the "Filipino Colonial Soldier 1775-1890" (my rough translation of the Spanish Title), by the Military Attache at the Spanish Embassy in London,as a gift! When i return to London at the start of Aug, I will send VeeVee details to put on the Website. The earlier illustrations are in colour, and there are a few B/W photos also. Alas my Spanish is very poor, so I won't attempt to translate. I don't know either if it is still in print or a not. It was in very good condition. Tell you more in a few months.-David
