I promised you that I'd get into more of my photo collection on the Philippines and last night I did. I pulled out several photos I collected courtesy of a retired USAF major who was an aerial photographer with the 2nd Observation Squadron from about 1937-39.
About 1938, he flew to Camp Keithley, on Mindanao and apparently attended a "gymkhana" put on by the local unit of Philippine Scouts. Since the forum's "masthead picture of the month" is a reenactor handling a water-cooled machine gun, I thought I'd start with a few I have of a Philippine Scout gun crew with a Browning M1917. Note that the pictures were taken with a flash at night and the quality isn't the best:
1) A Scout PFC behind the Browning:
2) Possibly he was having some problem with the machine gun, as a smiling Scout appears to be looking over his shoulder. Another appears to be examining the feed - perhaps a jam. Note the different uniform - maybe an American?:
3) These photos may have been taken a different night or on a different "problem" - note the different uniforms and headgear. First one, a rear view of a couple of Scouts serving a Browning (maybe the Scout on the right has lost one of his contacts???):
4) Possibly some sort of bayonet drill? Note some with "tin hats" and some with campaign hats. Note that all soldiers have M1903s and are probably all Philippine Scouts.
5) This photo obviously taken during daytime. Note that several of those in ranks have M1911 pistols.
1) In addition to the above photos, I also have 2-3 photos of the 26th Cavalry. The high altitude shot was taken by the gentleman from an O-46 and gives some idea of the entire 26th in "motion:, so to speak. Even the shrunken regiments of the pre-WWII era used a lot of "ground" when on the move.
2) This was sent to me by another friend - this one may have seen the light of day already. 1939.
Finally, a good way to end this display with the color guard passing in review - also taken (probably) at Camp Keithly about 1938.
