Gentlemen, I'd like to bless this new Korea through Vietnam historical section and introduce to you the one of the most feared and respected of all Philippine Army units during the Huk campaign of the early 1950's, It was a time when the armed forces of the Philippines was the at its professional best, flush with surplus U.S. weapons not yet outdated and manned by experienced war veterans from WW2. Note: The photographs (but obviously not the newspaper clippings) are all originals from my father's 3rd BCT scrapbook which have never been published or posted before on the internet, these may be subject to copyright. THE PHILIPPINE ARMY'S 3RD BATTALION COMBAT TEAM.......The c.o. and his staff. The commander: the late General Friedlander, then a Lt. Colonel. Today only very few remember him. But he was much admired in the whole army and was worshipped by all those who had the priviledge of serving under his command. Some news clipping of the period...... My father ( the dude wearing shades at center), head of recon with his men Oh yeah.....my old man sure loved scooting around with his boys in their armored cars. ACTUNG PANZER!....philippine armor! Captain Tony Ortega, armored cavalryman and cold warrior. Panzerschreck training. 3rd BCT one the move off the roads and deep into the hinterlands Doesn't scenes like this remind one of the French Foreign Legion in Indochina? Embarkation!, the 3rd BCT was a highly mobile strikeforce by land and sea. The Philippine Army had no Huey helicopters yet in those days but every other means of conveyance was readily available. Here's an interesting photo, the soldier in the foreground behind the railings looks like he's sporting a scout ranger's shoulder patch, perhaps a member of the early PC scout rangers? Correction: the patch is actually that of the II Military Area, a circle with a blue field. At the center of which is a black mountiain crossed with a yellow lightning streak and topped by a Roman numeral "II" .A visit by the secretary of national defense and future president Ramon Magsaysay. EPILOGUE.........

Thanks VeeVee. I have just seen the Timawa defense forum and it looks very interesting. I have yet to register though. Actually, I was thinking this and other photos from me to be exclusive for your reenactor's forum to attract more people into what we do. It also simplifies my tracking them because I forget sometimes. Maybe you can post a teaser there and link them to us?.....good advertisment scheme, yes?

Ray
Outstanding photo's and history of your father. Hope all is well with him.
Tell him I think he should lead a Coup and take over the PI's and get that country back on track and unite the military personnel like these photo's show.
We have the firepower, all we need is a little boat and some luck like Fidel>haha

Very cool, sir. First time I've seen pics of Magsaysay's BCTs. Maybe we can cross-reference these pics with the 1997 "Philippine Army: The First Hundred Years" and come up with particular kitlists for Anti-HUK, PEFTOK and other Pre-Vietnam personnel.
In the 2nd to the last pic... are those cartridge belts just very clean, very "khaki" M1923s (I suppose) or a ceremonial white? Also, would you know what pattern HBTs they wore? I wish we could "colorize" these pics and see more detail.
Thanks for sharing. I think you should copyright these. Or watermark them at least.

Ray, In the past some of the pictures you posted expired over time and are not viewable anymore. Do you want me to host these photos in my photobucket? I just hate to lose them.
Mish, I think those are ceremonial white ammo belts... and leggings (a'la MP gear). They're too white.

VICTORY IS AS GOOD AS WON!VeeVee, yes that's a good idea. I'll need some time to trace which photos are defunct. mish, let's go for it! Oh, the belt's were painted white, as were the helmet liners. They had enough surplus to do that just for parade purposes. Khaki uniforms with white accoutrements were the fashion for 1950's parade dress in tropical climates, and not just for MPs. Incidentally, for combat and field use, they used a black colored dye over their olive drab webbings which made it look dark sage green.

My apologies to Indiosbravos and to Rayadillo who posted this, I made a mistake in tinkering with my keyboards which made it appeared that I was the one who posted it. Anyway, I was doing research on what combat uniform the Phil Army used during the Korean conflict and planning to have one myself as part of my collection. Again my apologies

No apology needed. I knew this was from Ray. I was thankful for you because you reply in this post and in doing so bump this topic.
This forum is getting bigger and bigger and catching up on post at times can be tedious, and this is a good thing ..
It means the spirit of sharing and the fire and thirst for knowledge never dies.
