Here is a MUST SEE website for anyone seriously looking for an authentic impression of an 1898 Filipino soldier: [glow=red,2,300]Rayadillo [/glow] A research project in the study of Spanish colonial uniforms showing copyright photos of William Combs on actual Spanish military uniform during the Spanish-American War such as the Rayadillo uniforms, thingyades, belts, & other equipment & pharaphernalias similar if the same items used by the Spanish military in the Philippines. [ftp]http://www.agmohio.com/losrayadillos.htm[/ftp] We cannot yet contact Mr. Combs in order to ask permission to post some of his photos here in the forum but we will do so as soon as possible. Of special note are the following: 1) the natural brown leather "side bag" often used by Filipino soldiers using mauser rifles. (click on rayadillo "Guayabera") 2) the multi-pouch brown leather ammo belt used by Filipino soldiers using the mauser rifle.(click on rayadillo "Guayabera") 3) The rayadillo "Norfolk Jacket" (for those who wish to be snotty officers) ;D All these are featured in his uniforms, insignia and equipment section. Compare the photos I posted above with the photos of samples in William Comb's collection to see closer details.

In doing a Philippine Army 1898 impression you must be aware of certain things a) there was never an officially adopted triangular metal badge worn by Filipino soldiers pinned on the front of their hats. b) Filipino soldiers ALSO wore felt hats aside from the buri leaf or palm hat. These felt hats were either grey or white. Often, there is a black band. Sometimes, there is a tricolor thingyade. c) pants were usually either rayadillo, grey or red. There is a reenactment group now in the Philippines (Buhay na Kasaysayan) who are currently ordering the maufacture of rayadillo uniforms and leather accoutrements. We will post their items and prices soon. They will be reasonably cheap but of high authenticity and quality we hope ;D. Perhaps Perry who is a member of this forum and heads this reeanctment group in Manila can fill us in on this one of these days. For now we can begin the list with: a) Remington Rollingblock rifle- usually around $300, additional $40 with bayonet "musket spike" type. A dummy rollingblock is about $135. Also, blank rounds are available but not as easily as those for 7mm Spanish Mausers b) Mauser Model 1893 Spanish- an original Spanish can cost up to $700. The closest to a Spanish mauser is the Chilean Mauser which costs about $350 to $400. Turkish Mausers will pass and cost somwhere around $100. c) leather accoutrements- currently non are commercially sold specifically as reproduction Spanish-American war items. You can have them made but remember that the pouches for rolling block ammunition are different from those of the mauser. d) footwear: can be leather sandals, leather brogans etc. f) straw hats- NOTE. the ideal type of straw hat is stiff when dry. When one wets it a bit, one is able to shape the hat to conform with a particualr style and this form is retained upon drying. More to Follow.......

I dont know where this fits in the grand scheme of things - but the UP Diliman CMT (or whatever they call it nowadays) has a whole batallion of honor guard based off the rayadillo.
They wear those long pointy hats (pardon my historically inaccurate terminology) and drill all day. So if its starter uniforms they're looking for, they might have those light blue rayadillo uniforms for sale at the UP co-op.

Hello Friends;
I'm Perry. Ding & I are trying its best to re-produce the uniforms we want. Unfortunately, our system in our company where I used my PC cannot post pictures in the site, but I believe Vic already posted our photos in Rayadillo NCO & a boloman.
As for the triangle insignia, its not official or standard that the Revolutionary solider wear that thing, but I do have a actual photo of it as shown on the sample coffee book I sent to Ray, Vic, Philip, & other BNK members on a separate mail. I suggest during more formal presentation of uniforms during celebration & occassions in the US, re-enactors of Phil. Revol. wear the Rayadillo as complete as possible with insignias, cockade, haversack, canteen, etc.... to make the uniform more presentable, dignified & good looking.
Regarding the insignias like the triangle placed on the hat, the different branches placed by the officers in pairs on their collar, the sun bottons for officers, metal ranks of silver, gold stars & a sun, etc.... - we are trying our best to source it out. I got one before but after making some pieces, he tricked me by increasing too much his price & now we are looking for other sources. Really, its a very big pain in the neck doing these research & sourcing for the accurate & good supplier, going back & forth on different suppliers, doing & paying the cost of trial & error even you have the photos & dimension, delays & all of these problems Ding & I encounter. We hope these will pay-off in the future for us producing the most accurate Phil. Revolutionary uniforms & sharing it to both re-enactors / users here in the Philippines & abroad promoting Filipino Heroism, Nationalism, Values & Pride.
By the way, we ask everyones help if they can send a photo in this site & also in my mail pjavi@amkor.com of the Filipino medals including the ribbon during the Phil. Revolution. We like to reproduce it here so that we can have a more presentable re-enacment uniform. I do have a photo but the details of what design is in the medal is not clear & I do not even know the colors of the ribbon.
Mabuhay; Perry

Here is the Spanish mess kit, these are almost never found intact, there are 3 pieces total and when stacked together there is enough room inside to store any extra rations and utensils. these mess kits were carried inside the haversack.

he he he looky what I just bought..... It's a Spanish Artillery tunic button 7/8 inch.... I'm assuming it was made in Manila since it is back-marked "Adolfo Roensch, Manila" I had been wondering for a long time if buttons were being manufactured in the Philippines during the 1890s... I guess this answers my question.

Perry and Ding (in Manila) are putting the finishing touches on a website where you will be able to order reproduction rayadillo uniforms and Spanish equipment along with other historical re-creations. (if you are looking for just the fabric they might be able to help you as well)
maybe they will contact the webmaster of this forum and get permission to post their link

Does anyone know where I can get a repro sling for my M 1893 Spanish Mauser ? ( I reckon it would be about impossible to find an original, and then it would be too expensive, too fragile to use, and would belong in a museum ) I've thought about making one myself, but I can't find the proper brass, half-moon shaped buckle w/ reversed tongue, or even one that could be modified ( except an oval one without the reversed tougue, that could be cut in half ) Salamat !

Almost all their items are originals and in different conditions. I know they rarely sell repros specially rifle slings of that vintage.
And I don't know if you will find a repro sling for a 1893 Spanish Mauser at all. You may have to go for what's available which are the originals.
I have bought a lot of vintage items from Paul and Vicky.

Hey Philip , I talked to Paul an' he said they ain't got no M1893 Mauser slings, just some that's similar. I don't know whether to get one of 'em, or just make one myself that would probably be more close to the original... I reckon I'll have to think on it for a spell... Anyways, Daghan Salamat for the help once again, Douglas
