Letters Of Peter Lewis 1898-1902 - Pvt. Lewis served with the New York Volunteers in Cuba and later with the 8th Inf. Regt. in Batangas Prov. Luzon during the Fil-Am War. An Interesting excerpt from a letter from him to his brother: (please note he was semi-literate and this is his original spelling) Precidio, California Friday,Sept.14 1900 ( Paragraph 5) : There is an island out in the "Bay"call the "Alcatraz"Island, it is a Military Prison, there are about 400 Prisoners there, some serving years for milertery offences. There is a man doing 99 years and another man come there to serve 40 years for turning traitor in the Phillipines, he was in the Volunteers there and deserted and joined the Filipinios Forses and was made a Major, he was caught and sentinced to be shot but McKinley made it 40 years.... In my opinion, this book provides a unique insight into the mind-set of the average yankee soldier sent to the P.I. to "liberate" the islands, ie: derogatory names and utter disdain for the native people, and a casual attitude towards killing, pillage, and the wholesale burning of homes and entire villiages.

I saw this while browsing at a nearby "Bookmark" (a bookstore chain) this afternoon. Didn't have enough on me at the time to buy it though. Would be nice to read how "they" viewed the conflict. I'll probably get it when I drop by next.
Either this or "Fortress of Empire"... a coffeetable book I found at the same bookstore; very nice photos of Spanish fortifications scattered all over the Philippines and the thinking behind them.
