RIP, po. Seaside's Antonio Nimis, survivor of Bataan Death March, dies[/u][/url][/size] (Monterey Herald, 06/26/12) Retired Army Staff Sgt. Antonio Nimis of Seaside, a survivor of the Bataan Death March, died June 16 at the age of 92 at his home. Born Dec. 24, 1919, in the Philippines, Sgt. Nimis was a scout serving with the 45th Infantry Regiment when the Japanese Army invaded the country during World War II. Sgt. Nimis was among tens of thousands of American and Filipino troops taken prisoner and forced to march more than 60 miles after the capture of the Bataan Peninsula. After he was released from captivity, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, served in the Merchant Marine after World War II, and again served in the Army in the Korean War. He was decorated with the Bronze Star, Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster and Combat Infantryman's Badge with star. Sgt. Nimis retired from the Army at Fort Ord in 1965, then worked as a chef at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula. At the time of his death, he was one of a number of veterans receiving end-of-life care through the We Honor Vets program of the Hospice Foundation, Central Coast Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice Inc., and Hospice of Santa Cruz County. Sgt. Nimis was preceded in death by his wife, Eufemia. He is survived by sons Roland, Antonio, Rudy and Edward Nimis; a daughter, Nelida Nimis; and seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services and burial with full military honors have taken place in Seaside.

Antonio was born in Madalag Capiz, Philippines on December 24, 1919, the second child to Monico and Justina Nimis. In The Pacific Theater of World War II Antonio was an infantryman, POW and Bataan Death March Survivor. After WWII he married Eufemia Barrios and they began a long life together as members of America’s Greatest Generation. Eufemia took care of their growing family while Antonio continued a military career that included tours of duty in Korea. Eventually arriving at Ft.Ord they set permanent roots in a diverse neighborhood raising five children and a granddaughter. An incredible ballroom dancer, Antonio never missed a weekend out with Eufemia in forty years. He was a phenomenal cook, dedicated fisherman, member of The Filipino-American Club, Catholic and longtime SF Giants fan. Antonio was preceded in death by his wife Eufemia. He is survived by children, Roland (Linda) Nimis, Nelida Nimis, Antonio (Karen) Nimis Jr., Rudy Nimis, and Edward (Shirley) Nimis. Seven grandchildren, Michael (Dalia) Nimis, Lori (Andrew) Laureano, Stephanie (Rob) Gross, Jonathan (Erica) Nimis, Joshua Nimis, Joanna Nimis and Lauryn Nimis and six great-grandchildren, Tyson and Harlem Gross, Leia and Anthony Laureano and Aaron and Sarah Nimis. Visitation is Thursday, June 21st at Mission Memorial Park Chapel at the top of Ord Grove in Seaside from 4:00 to 7:00 PM. A Rosary will commence at 7:00 PM. Funeral mass at St. Francis Xavier Church in Seaside is on Friday, June 22nd at 11:00 AM. Interment with full Military Honors will follow at Mission Memorial Park Cemetery.
