Two more videos: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jjdnwx2ovzAwww.youtube.com/watch?v=Rnp2j9cqio0www.interaksyon.com/article/29118/tales-of-their-fathersInterAksyon.com The online news portal of TV5As InterAksyon was putting together the special documentary for the 70th commemoration of the Fall of Bataan, it became painfully evident that the tales of a whole generation of heroes -- they who fought, lost, died or lived on to fight again -- were fast dying along with them. Filipinos do have a tradition of oral history, with stories and life lessons passed on from parents to children and to their children and so on. But in the case of the heroes of World War II, many took their stories with them to the grave, apparently choosing, for reasons only they know, to keep the horrors they went through to themselves. Marilyn Alarcon, whose father Jose survived the Bataan Death March and went on to continue serving in the US Army until he retired, said it took decades for him to talk about the war and, even when he did, “he didn’t really say much.” He did leave some life lessons and a life lived caring for his family back home in the Philippines. On the other hand, much of what Jose Calugas Jr. knew of his father Jose Sr.’s wartime exploits came from written accounts or from the Medal of Honor recipient’s comrades in the Philippine Scouts. We are fortunate to have these offspring of heroes share the tales of their fathers with us. Yet, these videos also drive home the urgency of preserving the tales of the few remaining heroes of World War II before they are lost forever in the mists of our collective forgetfulness and leave us, as a people, all the poorer for our diminishing sense of history.
