Relatively little aerial bombardment was done to Manila. However, the street fighting was terrible. At one point, I know that 155mm and 240mm guns were being fired at Japanese strongpoints at virtual point-blank range. Supposedly, Manila was the most devastated city in WWII except for Warsaw. Pictures I have seen back this up.

Hey Rick....I guess no place was safe south of the Pasig. The photo/film that sticks in my mind depicts a Sherman tank firing at Japs in Rizal Baseball Stadium. Betcha the designers of that ball park never thought, in their wildest dreams, that a place designed for baseball would be a killing ground in early 1945. If memory serves the tank was concentrating on a "dugout" alongside one of the base paths. Manila certainly did take a beating. Very rare thing for this type of urban destruction to occur in the Pacific Theatre. Cheers.
