Somewhere north of the city of Manila, 1945
A burst of Thompson machinegun fire ripped through the silence of the evening. For Captain Maeda of the deaded Kempetai secret police, it was his last moment of consciousness.
But for me... it was just one more corpse closer to freedom.
I'd taken no chances at being shot at by the Americans. I put on my old uniform (luckily I'd had a second one made that my family hid for me during my time in that terrible concentration camp, Capas) from 1941 and went looking for trouble.
Trouble found me first... sorta.
I was checking for intelligence when a loud, hearty voice nearly made me jump out of my skin.
"Hey buddy could you hand me that hat?"
It was one of the Americans. He was apparently part of the group that 1st Cavalry had sent ahead of MacArthur's main army to sweep resistance out of the way.
I was checking the kempetai officer for intelligence - I'd been battalion G-2 back on Bataan - but all this Joe was interested in was that stupid hat!
"How do I look?"
War does strange things to us and makes us do even stranger things. It was the strangest thing to see - that big tall blonde American with that tiny little kempetai hat on his head - I almost laughed!
I suppose he was going to send it home to his family as a souvenir. I had all the souvenirs I would care to keep from this war, marked on my body - and my soul.
