According to my sources the original Commonwealth flag was the following : The image also appeared on a famous german flag book of 1939 : "Flaggenbuch " ; on F.O.T.W. (http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/ ) We can find out the following notes : "As in Flaggenbuch (1939). A blue flag with the coat of arms in the middle and four yellow five-pointed stars, one in each corner. The coat of arms at the time was a shield: per pale azure and gules, in the chief argent thee mullets of five or and overall an escutcheon oval per fess gules a tower issuant or and argent a sea-lion or holding a sword. Crest: on a torse gules and argent standing an eagle displayed proper. Motto: below on ribbon argent "COMMONWEALTH OF THE PHILIPPINES". Flag adopted from :1935 to 1946.

Was this flag another version or variant of the Commonwealth flag shown on the "flaggenbuch " of 1939 ? That source was a very important source : The "Flaggenbuch" was Edited and published by the Higher Commandment of the Imperial Navy. (Bearbeitet und herausgegeben vom Oberkommando der Kriegsmarine). Let me know your opinion friends.... mabuhay Paolo

Hi Paolo;
I saw the Commonwealth flag without the stars on the side on the original photo during pre-war when the Phil. Commonwealth Army or Constabulary in short sleeves & short pants with Guinit helmet marching on a parade raising the said flag. Maybe Philip or Ray can share & post that photo here.
I believe all the 3 flags therfe are all correct, its just a matter of variation or evolution but not familiar which comes 1st & last. The theory behind it is that the designs evlve or change according to the preferrence. Like for example that patches placed on the uniform, before the AFP used to place the name & the serial Number & branch of service below it during the 1970s till 1987. Then they removed the serial number & retain the family name only, & on the other side, the branch of service. Then in late 1990s, they interchange the position of the family name & the branch of service. Same also on the AFP, Branch of service & specific unit pathces they placed on the shoulder & breast.
Not only on patches but the branch of service seal also change. Remember the Evolution of the Philippine Army seal. Same theory on the flag of Commonwealth, its just a variation but all are correct.

I discovered some new infos... : The flag with 4 5 pointed star in silver (white ) was the first version of the flag, the following version changed the color of the stars from silver to gold (yellow ), the flag without stars was the Army flag... I will post more details as soon as possible.
Mabuhay !

The four star is the official Presidential Commonwealth flag.
The one we had made is a "generic" Commonwealth Army of the Philippines flag.
The original has the 1st Div. insignia added over and position below of the Commonwealth seal. hope this helps.

Thanks for the infos Phil ; so "your" flag is an Army flag,do you have the original image of it with the 1st Div. insignia ? Cn you post t here ? The four star flag is the official flag of the President during Commonwealth time, before it had 4 white stars, then they changed the color and they become yellow (gold ).... .
