Philippine Veterans Bank Launches 2010 World War II True Stories Contest www.veteransbank.com.ph/news2010_6.html
Makati City, Philippines – Philippine Veterans Bank in partnership with Philippine Daily Inquirer and the Department of Education, launches today 2010 World War II True Stories, a writing contest for high school students aimed at collecting true accounts of Filipinos who survived the war including personal experiences of World War II veterans and others who lived through the conflict.
Launched last year, this year’s World War II True Stories is made more special as the country celebrates the 65th Anniversary of the Liberation Trail.
The writing contest is open to all high school students between the ages of 13 to 18 from both public and private schools. Participating students have to submit an original, unpublished, logical, cohesive, and fluently-developed narrative recounting a true World War II account based on interviews and research conducted by the student. The narrative must be submitted to Philippine Veterans Bank along with an entry form that can be found in Philippine Daily Inquirer’s “2bU” or “Learning” section, or in news-tabloid “Libre” that will be published once a week until March 2010.
PVB Vice-President Miguel Angelo Villa-Real, the contest’s program director, believes that this year’s number of entries will surpass last year and that the quality of stories that will be received will be better.
“Despite time constraints last year in promoting the contest, the number of entries we received was more than what we expected,” said Mr. Villa-Real. “We are hoping to do better this year and we believe more students will join the contest, not only for the prizes, but also because this contest directly links us with our history and the sacrifices our forefathers made for the cause of freedom.”
He added that there are still a lot of World War II stories out there waiting to be told.
“The War encompassed the entire Philippine archipelago and we believe that every province, every town, every barrio has a War story to tell,” said Mr. Villa-Real. “We encourage our students to find these stories, write them down, and share them with us.”
A special panel of judges will be reading through all the entries and will have the arduous task of choosing the top three World War II stories.
The writer of the winning story will take home a computer package consisting of a laptop and a printer plus a PVB savings account of P10,000. The second-placer will get a desktop computer and a PVB savings account of P7,000 while the third placer receives a digital camera and a PVB savings account of P5,000.
Participating students have until March 16, 2010 to submit their entries at any of Philippine Veterans Bank’s 60 branches nationwide. They may also send their entries to:
PVB Corporate Communications
Philippine Veterans Bank Head Office
#101 V.A. Rufino corner Dela Rosa Streets
Legaspi Village, Makati City 1229
Winners will be announced on April 5, 2010 and awarding will take place on April 12.
