Greetings All!!
After being a lurker, figured I'd jump in feet first. I plan on making my trip to the PI this Summer. This is a trip my Mom isn't around to make, as she died in 1984 Relatives are dying out, it's time to learn all I can.
Mom (Natividad Castro Prada, dau of Robustiano (Sanz) & Natividad (Castro) Prada) was born in Tuguegarao, Cagayan, Luzon on 3 March 1920. After graduation from Holy Ghost Convent & College in Manila, Mom went to work for the phone company at Camp John Hay. Funny how I even have photos of her taken on 7 Dec 1940 on the way to the Asian hot Springs. What a difference 1 year would make in her life!
That's where we [her children] erred. Mom wanted to talk about the war, but we told her it was another lifetime. We didn't understand. Dad only talked about it when his brothers showed up. While he was in the Pacific, his war wasn't the same as Mom's. I came to truly understand her, once I was a veteran of the first Gulf War. NOW...how I wish I'd paid attention or actually asked for detailed answers.
We know she was at Camp John Hay when the bombing began. Other than that, I know nothing else. Which is why I need to see the relatives face to face. When I call and attempt to ask questions, the responses are always; "That was such a bad time." I'm taking that in stride as the Filipina way of not wanting to say anything negative, but now is the time for all their stories to be told. Other than brief mentions, I've not read anything about the interments at Camp John Hay. Does anyone have any info on the site?
I have been a reenactor/living historian since 1989. Currently doing 18thC in GA/FL. I certainly know the value of gathering all the history needed to create future historical scenarios. While I doubt I'll ever do WWII, I'm more than happy to support it. Are there any pinoy groups in the Florida area?
While in the PI, I will be visiting Baguio, as I need to see what Mom always talked about.
