Friends;
The Bataan organizers of the Apr 9 event turned us down. We are not included in their activities.
Naka-usap mismo nila Jojo Dy & Nicolas yung boss ni Heiville na matandang babae na walang interes dito, inspite nagbigay patayo ng Portflio with photos!!!!
Here's the time for us to make a brainstorming & let's share our inputs :
SUGGESTIONS / ALTERNATIVES :
1. Mon, I & Vic (yata yun, unang nag suggest before, correct me if I'm wrong), nagsuggest kung we shall just go there by our own in uniform then kuha tayo ng photo ops.
Di naman bawal yun I believe, di naman tayo nangugulo at sasama sa activities nila. Parang June12 Independence Day celebration sa Luneta... Wala namang nagbabawal na di pumunta dun, not unless manggugulo ang tao. We are there on our own to take souvenir shots or as tourist like other visitors.
Advantage : Kung makita tayo ng iba & other officials, magugustuhan nila yan. Kung ni-reject yan ng iilan, I believe mas maraming magkakagusto nyan at mapupuna tayo at next time not only in Apr9, ma-invite tayo sa event nila.
Disadvantage : Since there are delegates especially baka yung Pres. of the Phil naron, baka hulihin tayo since naka uniform tayo (not just wearing a simple civilian attire as visitors) & it may ruin our day, kahit we think we are not doing anything bad, THIS IS THE RISK.
2. Or we can get the offer of Col. Resty Aguilar na sa Capas Tarlac tayo mag celebrate.
Disadvantage : Ang "main meet" ng activity in at Bataan ang celebration. Low impact compare kung sa Bataan tayo
Advantage : Kahit low impact dito welcome tayo, there's no risk. What we just have to do is to have close coordination with Resty para maganda kalabasan ng activities.
Disadvantage : Canot think of any so far
Pls. send your inputs, more suggestions or votes kung anong alternatives ang maganda.

If we're talking about the actual Mt. Samat ceremony on April 9th, I'm not too surprised. I was hopeful but not surprised.
According to Col. Aguilar, the security at this event is really tight because of the presence of the president as well as the US and Japanese ambassadors. Space is also very limited, and the program schedule is very tight. If you plan to go there as spectators, check first if you need to register or what. This event is handled by the Department of Defense.
However, there is nothing holding us back from participating in a local town observance like in Balanga. An event that's handled by the local government and community. I think that is the next alternative. And after such an event, you guys could all go to Mt. Samat for the photo shoot when all the VIP's are gone.
Then there's the other event the following day at Camp O'Donnell as suggested by Col. Aguilar. This is a Phil. Army event and he has a lot of weight and discretion there.
Going to Corregidor could be reserved for the following month, around May 6th.

Agree. Let's hook up with Guy Hilberto and Col. Aguilar and plan something doable for the event.

I am curious to know as who and what who this lady who turned us down is in relation to the event in Bataan? Anybody have the full info on her? Maybe we are dealing and wasting time with the wrong person to organize with. Is she the main organizer of this event? I have no idea who this person is.
The best is to compose an email a letter to the Sec. of defense himself. We need everyone's skills to write a convincing letter. At least we made an effort to reach the Secretary himself. There is still time.
Then if still do not get some sort of invitation, then we can organize something with Col. Aguilar.

I'm almost sure that there will be a ceremony or even some sort of parade in Balanga that day. I think in the past they've done "reenactments" of the death march. I'll try to find out and let you guys know.

From the way I understood it, we were asking for some kind of "special participation" in the ceremony at Mt.Samat, maybe some kind of role to play or even just a distinctive place to be assigned to us where we can stand at attention?
What exactly was asked for in the request letter was what was refused.
The question is if that ceremony is open to the public, we can still go (even in uniform) if we want to. Ours are historical uniforms meant to commemorate the battle which happened there, they are not prohibited. We are not impersonating AFP personel.
If they were modern AFP uniforms, then they are prohibited.
If there was a contingent of AFP personel wearing similar Bataan campaign WW2 uniforms, I'll understand if our presence in our uniforms are prohibited.
Nevermind the idiot Philippine media. The foreign media will want to pick us out after the ceremonies, as long as they have noticed our presence. Regardless of how far we were standing from whatever boring speeches were made at the covered stand.
The main thing is to take photos of ourselves using the site as the backdrop. Also, we want to see the cross, the monument coplex, and the whole battle vista itself. If the ceremonies are over and the people there vacate the place by noontime, then we can do that.
IT ALL DEPENDS IF THERE IS AN AREA WITHIN THE VENUE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. BUT WHAT WORRIES ME IS THAT THE ACCESS ROAD GOING TO THE SITE ITSELF MAY BE BLOCKED, AND/OR PARKING OUR TRANSPORT AT THE PARKING AREA MAY BE DIFFICULT IF NOT IMPOSSIBLE UNTIL AFTER THE CEREMNONY HAS ENDED AND ALL THE VIP PEOPLE HAVE LEFT.
We just have to ask more details on this before we finally call it quits.

Plan "B" the town of "Balanga, Bataan" if there will be a commemoration of some sort there.
- Were we can have a "gathering of a WWII jeeps" at the town of Balanga to start the festivites and parade then continue to with some possible "Japanese" reenactors invited along.
- Secong stage will be a grand jeep convoy parade c/o Alvin's jeep group to Mt. Samat with all the reenactors riding along to pay our respects to the heroes of Bataan. after the formal ceremonies there are over.
Can this be organize with the Governor of Bataan! As this would help possible bring in more tourists to the town of Balanga. This should generate good media attention. This could be proposed to the Governor. As I did this "Jeep Convoy" to Mt. Samat with Col Aguilar a few years ago.
This event is similar to how they hold those commemoration events like the D day convoy or Bridge to far military vehicles convoy. But this time we are all in PS, PC and PA uniforms. If we could organize as many WWII jeeps weapons carrier or Army trucks we can muster for this event.
And a possibility of a Bataan encampment?

I'm waiting for word. Will let you guys know asap. I actually like the participation in a local community's commemoration rather than an official high dignitaries type of event. I like the thought of a grassroots level impact. It could be warmer and more relaxed and it will probably reach the "hearts and minds" more effectively. Then just go to Mt. Samat for a photo shoot session when there won't be too many people ruining the shots by being in the background.

That sounds good. I hope there is some sort of commemoration in Balanga that's going to be held, or any other nearby town on the morning of that day. Who knows, they may even feed us lunch before we head up to Mt. Samat on our jeeps. (kung kakayanin ng mga jeep ang load natin pa-akyat).
Then if we're not too battered, we can go to Resty's shebang at O'Donnel the next day, ha, ha, ha.
Hey come to think of it, that whole itinerary sort of completes the "Battle for Bataan" soldier's experience....from Balanga, retreat to the "last stand" at Mt. Samat, and then into the POW camps of O'Donnel. We could make a reenactment "tour" out of this.
Now we know how it really feels to be a "Battling Bastard" shunned by the higher ups ;D

The Lady, You speak of may well be the same one the has permitted the site to fall into such a poor state. On my inquiries last year, I learnt that she is An Army official with zero interest in promoting tourists visits or pilgrimages by any other bodies other than govt. officials or Govt./Army orders requesting access for events such as April 9th. No real attept has been made to repair or restore damage and years of neglect, other than to pass a lick of paint over the cracks. Fallen marble wall plaques with their fine carving of the assorted battles etc have not been restored, but have just been propped against the foot of the wall. Check out the fallen cast concrete sculptures that have tumbled from the sides of the cross itself! We need to go way over and above this "jobsworth" woman to get anywhere at Mt. S. Almost all the contents of the museum now has been transferred to Camp O'Donnell, I was told.
Mounting a press/media campaign to highlight this would address this serious situation and raise our own profile also. Camp O'Donnell is where we should go, and take part in the local town's event. A better more fitting place also to voice a dignified protest at way Mt Samat is being Maintained. David

So far here's the little info I've gathered... but more to come.
There are no local observance of Bataan day per se that's independent of the main Mt. Samat event. I think there is a little bit of procession/parade starting from Balanga with a float and reenactors riding in it that would reenact some Death March at some point (I don't kow who these guys are but maybe real Phil. Army in costume?). But this is part and parcel part of the Mt. Samat event. Maybe part of the event starts in Balanga and ends at Mt. Samat.
I was told that the general public can indeed attend the Mt. Samat event. I don't know whether they have shuttle buses to the top or what. So you guys can at the very least attend as part of the public. But I may be able to arrange some sort of "guest" status through Bataan's department of tourism. Stay tuned... trying to find out more.

Freinds;
Jojo Nicolas & Jojo Dy were called by Cuevas to attend the meeting with the Dept of Nat'l Defense (DND) at the Camp Aguinaldo to discuss the Apr 9 event. This shows that the DND really try its best to consider us (Phil. Reenactors) for the Apr 9 even its hard for them :
1. As per discussion, they explained that we cannot be involve during the ceremony with the president since they themselves who are members of the DND & involved in the event, when the PSG comes somethimes their whole plan will be discarded. Even them the PSG does not know them & somethimes prohibits them due to the security to the president & changes plan frequently, maybe due to security reason.
2. But the DND group says we can be involved in CAPAS Tarlac celebration. Actually they have WWII artifact of train carts there which were used by the Bataan soldiers / prisoners after they did the Death March going to Capas.
3. The DND asked what can we (reenactors) do. Jojo asked them in return, what do they (DND) want us to do? The DND asked if we can perform a reenactment using the train carts there used by the Filipino & US prisoners. Jojo agreed we do reenactment & planned he will contact other cosplayers to join & Jojo will contribute to dress other actors who will be part of the reenactment.
4. This will be a a big activity that needs immediate preparation, planning, organizing, etc.... But 1st the team is asking us to list who wll be the patricipants. Hi Philip & Ray, how many of you will be coming home from USA? Hi Rommel & BNK Hong Kong, pls. advise the same. We need the list of names 1st.
5. In parallel while the team is planning, pls. place all your suggestions, ideas so we can brainstorm for a good reenactment. Remember, "no guns" So the challenge is how can we make a great reenactment without guns.. ha-ha-ha,... but seriously speaking, no joke.
6. In-order not to mix-up the topics in one thread in preparation for Apr 9, I'll be making a separate thread titled : "Reenactment for Apr 9". There we can send the ideas for a nice reenactment play (without guns,...maybe suntukan nalang with the Jap. reenactors he-he).
Hi Jojo - pls. add more details, alam ko parang may mga nalimot akong ilagay base sa usapan natin.

Thank you Jojo for attending the meeting with the DND representing us. The DND asked if we can perform a reenactment using the train carts there used by the Filipino & US prisoners. Jojo agreed we do reenactment & planned he will contact other cosplayers to join & Jojo will contribute to dress other actors who will be part of the reenactment. Is DND aware that some reenactors who were planning to join and will be flying in from out of the country come dressed in ragged POW's in capas Tarlac will enthusiastically participate with this idea? JOJO, My suggestion is we do a jeep convoy starting from maybe Balanga to Mt. Samat instead. As my plan B idea. This is more in showing the proud tradition of representing the PS, PC and PA. We should be representing the USAFFE heroes in their proud military uniforms aside from educating the public. Philip

Well, its April 9. the day Bataan surrendered. But who wants to reenact the death march? I agree with Philip to reenact the more positive and proud traditions of our heroes.
