hey cplhawk....are you referring to the 31st US Infantry regiment????if so, it was composed of enlistees recruited in the states, shipped from angel island, california, for assignment to USAFFE. as i understand it, individual men volunteered for foreign duty. some even had the option of what department (hawaii, panama, philippines) they wished to serve in. my niece in law's grandfather volunteered for philippine duty and was moved thru angel island to the PI and subsequently assigned to the 31 infantry regiment. he was taken prisoner when bataan surrendered and spent the rest of the war in hospital at bilibid prison when not working as forced labor on japanese construction projects (including the repair and enlargment of clark field). the national guard units, included armored units from wisconsin, california (kentucky???) i know for sure, and an anti aircraft regiment from new mexico (200th CA). i am sure there are more and you can bet there are folks on this board who can fill you in much better than i can, but i thought i would throw in what little i know. but if you are inquiring about the 31st infantry regt (US) i can assure you that it was a long time regular army outfit. in fact, it had never been stationed stateside. it was called the "american foreign legion", serving in china, russia, and the philippine islands.
