I got this while browsing through the LIFE Magazine scanned images on Google: Not a haversack, whether M1910 or M1928, nor a musette, as far as I can tell. Maybe locally-sourced? Anyone have any info on this one? It'd be interesting to add another item to our standard PS gear checklist, if ever.

I also noticed that and is similar to what the Constabulary had during the early 1912 periods. I believe this troops are Constabulary as I read that they were rounding up suspected Japanese spies around Manila right after Pearl harbor. Techincally they were a civil police force.

I have no idea what those haversacks are. Maybe locally made? I'll ask around. Nice picture find.

Boy do they look like the "blanket bags" that were issued in the 1890's to the Americans. ( I think )

I agree with Scott on this one. Those look like the M1879 Blanket bag used by US Troops in the late 1890's up to the adaption of the M1910 series of equipment.

So they had really old surplus then. Not a stretch to have many of them laying around in quartermaster storage. -victor

Thanks for the 1878 blanket bag lead, guys. Looks to be so.
I had another pack moment while watching Shootout's Cabanatuan raid episode. In a river crossing footage, a Scout was shown wearing an early pattern musette - single strap closure, M1921?

Am looking for anyone with knowledge of Chester Thomas Mason who was in the death march, but died and, unofficially, was buried along the trail. Would appreciate any help or and guidelines. Howard D. Riddle
