Great pics Vic.
I have a capture program that can do it too but have to set up my vhs tape player. Will try and post mine.
The Stuart tanks rumbling along Manila was incredible , specially seeing that convoy of Universal Bren carriers too. The first and only time I have ever seem them. And Manila looks so unspoiled and uncongested. Tanks for showing them.

Are these Garands?

They have to be P-17 Enfields. As I remenber seeing them in a lot of the scenes. The Jap tanks and infantry on the attack was really fantastic to see to film. Even the assault boats. Sayang as I could not read the sub titles due to bad quality of the copy. They even had BAR's in an ambush scene. The Malinta Tunnel shot was really surprising to see. I know TOHO films did the Godzilla movies I guess that's why there were scale model boats in the assault on Corregidor. The script was so well designed to show the asian brother relation of the Japanese and the Filipinos. And the Americans as evil "allies". Philip

Yeah but look at the farthest one. It looks like a Garand.
And I wonder if their American actors were POWs.

Greetings Victor,
Wow! These are great screen shots. The quality looks clearer from the one I saw in the Philippines a long time ago. It must have gone thru several transfers. I don't even remember seeing some of these scenes. Excellent find. I can almost make out the no. on the side of the M3 Stuart, looks like U.S.A. W242066? It must be really fun to watch. Philip seems to appreciate the authentic location and authentic equipment used. I can't comment on the rifle since I'm not familiar with the P17. Farthest rifle does look like an M1 but the front sight guard shadow looks to high for an M1. Plus if thats the sling and sling swivel right next to his left hand holding up the rifle the front hand guard looks a little bit too long and thin to be an M1 Garand.

Yeah those are M1's. The sight looks funny because it is a gas trap.
In Death March, they talk about making this movie. A couple of interesting points. They got new clothing to do the movie with, as yes, they are the prisoners. They were kind of happy about that. The Japanese Guards also accidently handed out thier weapons to the prisoners. A Japanese officer announced this to the prisoners, who kindly gave the Japanese back thier rifles.

Interesting. Did they get more food aside from clothing? I'll have to read that book again. I read it back in the early 80's and I can't remember anything except getting depressed about the book. Knowing more historical context now, I should read it again. I go home to the PI in December. I'll get my old 80's copy of the book which is still on my shelf in my old room. Also, for reference here is the difference between the gas trap and gas port garands: www.fulton-armory.com/GasTrapGallery.htm

The 2 that talk about it don't say anything about food. One talks about getting and Enfield, the other says he got an M1.
Yes, it really made me dislike alot of the Japanese mentioned.

The rifle in the background is indeed a Garand. It is the early Gas Trap model which looked slightly different. You can see the shiny gas cylinder. Great pictures!

Rick don't you have that same book? Do you remember any references to this movie being made by the POWs? Do you remember if it was 3 quarters of the way through the book? I can't find it without re-reading the whole book again. The gas trap garand has the funny mickey mouse ears for front sight guards

Yes I do remember the reference. Without looking, either, I seem to recall it was "Down With the Stars and Stripes". Naturally, you've got my curiosity and now I've got to pour through the whole book to find it!! Yep, "Mickey Mouse" ears - about as good a nickname as I've ever heard of!! P.S. The Japanese had plenty of M3 Stuart tanks to use. They captured 31 at one fell swoop, when a bunch were abandoned on the retreat to Bataan. As I recall, a couple were used in the invasion of Corregidor on May 5 because they were more reliable than Japanese tanks!

I skimmed through Donald Knox's book "Death March" and found the reference to a movie on pages 240-241. (The original hardbound edition)
It was in the interview with Benson Guyton, who recalled a movie called "Down With the Stars and Stripes". He said they got a new uniform out of the deal and Enfield M1917s. He said they took parts off the rifles so they couldn't be used again by the Japanese after they handed them back. There was dymnamite buried on the scene and they had to run through with the dynamite exploding around them. Nothing was mentioned about better food or conditions. He said they had to push the trucks back to camp for a mile. They got to keep the new uniforms.
Forrest Knox mentions appearing in, what he called a documentary, in which they had to pretend they were surrendering by throwing down their U.S. rifles. That was the part in which the POWs were accidentally issued the guards' rifles, according to Knox.

I just encountered a mention of this movie in the book Surviving Bataan and Beyond by Col. Irvin Alexander. They took several hundred Americans from Cabanatuan to be extras. They did get more food for their efforts.
