Atienza. Manila, 1985. Paperbound, 235pp Privately published, a firsthand account by Gen. Atienza of the valor and sufferings of the men of the 41st Division of the Philippine Army during World War II. My Uncle served in the 41st Field Artillery PA in Bataan. Could you check if it mentions about the 41st FA unit.

Hi Philip, Will do. The Dizons' grandfather was also with the 41st but according to Ivan he didn't survive the death march. I'll see if there are references to your relatives.

Here is the roster of 41st Division PA officers from the book. It's useful for anyone researching relatives. (click for bigger) I'm not finished reading the book yet but it's well written. Gen. Atienza turned out to be a news editor for the Philippine Collegian (Univ. of the Philippines' school paper) in college. The book is a very refreshing angle of action from the Philippine Army side. Raw recruit reservists or not, one must admire how well they did in battle. Atienza related how the whole of the 41st's main line at Abucay had a false alarm one night and jittery soldiers all along the line started shooting in the dark. This was the night before the Japanese opened their attack on the Abucay line. Officers eventually got the men to stop shooting but then Capt. Atienza noted how relieved he was that the men were able to fire their rifles for the first time. At least they knew their rifles would work! The Japanese didn't break through these men in Abucay, they did in the exhausted 51st Division area where the terrain was more rugged. Amazing. In terms of Philippine Army uniform information. He did say that the men wore a mix of blue denim fatigues and khaki shorts (which I thought they wore only in garrison).

Yes Victor, that's yet another good idea for an impression of a PA sniper this time. It think I saw a picture of an American soldier sitting on a hood of scout car (or halftrack) wearing such an outfit of broadie helmet and sage green herringbone twill overalls in Bataan. Speaking of snipers, I came across this blog featuring the first hand account story of a Philippine Army sniper (I suppose from the 51st division) named Augusto Roa Realuyo This is a group shot of his pre-War ROTC days, notice the peculiar rifle they used? I wonder if is a Philippine variation of the basic P17 Enfiled rifle, can anyone identify it from this photo? Here's the blogsite....... calzoncillo.blogspot.com/2005/04/death-march-april-9-1942.html

Just finished this. Excellent book. A very vivid and refreshing account from the PA side. I'm very proud of them. There should be a movie made about this.
