Yesterday October 16th in Chicago Illinois, Rudy Cabigas and I were given a great honor on unveiling the work of renowned artist James Muir "Duty First". A 15-foot bronze statue honoring the gallant men of the US 26th Cavalry Philippine Scouts.
The event was attended by veterans of all services and ages. The ceremony took place in the private museum of a prominent Filipino doctor and his wife. Inside and outside of the museum are collections of precious artworks.
Pictures from the event to follow.

Fantastic! Can you post a picture of the statue? Rudy was the consultant and "model" for it I'm glad you and Rudy were able to make it and adjust your schedules. Edit: I saw the pictures in your FB. Great masterpiece, the cavalryman indeed looks like a Filipino. Will wait for you to post the pictures. Did Rudy suit up at all in a 26th impression?

I tried getting on photo bucket but not responding to add one in my 26th with artist will try later. Picture will not be able to describe this doctors private museum. This man is a great patriot of America and he comes from Cebu.

The Filipino face was copied (I heard) from the cousin of the doctor who commissioned it.

Nice One Guys! Incredibly huge sculpt! nice one to have a small scale 1/6 version of the sculpt. Do you have another shot from the opposite side? "Our Strength is in Loyalty!"Philip

Nice bronze job this one. Captain Rudy sure cuts a real cool splitting image next to it. The PS infantry representation with Don adds a nice touch too. I was just wondering why a U.S. broadie helmet was chosen for the horse to trample on (as a sign of victory over the vandal foe)when it perhaps should have been a Japanese helmet instead.. But I guess the sculptor just had to find a suitable place to write "Duty First".

Hi Ray and Philip
I have been trying to down load on photo bucket but to use. Not responding.
Yes Philip other side shot and Ray the helmet with bullet per artist James Muir who went to West point said it means Americans who died on Battan not the Japs. Plus Duty First had to go somewhere like you said.

Thanks for showing more pictures!
I wonder why he left out the gas mask bag? That was a very important issue during that period. Was there a bolo knife?

Hi Philip
Just a note I am out the door for stuff. James used a copy of the one at Fort Reily which is a period of middle 1930's. If you noticed it has a saber which was not issued after 1938 or so. It captures both early and late 26th Cavalry.
Philip you should know an artist see's what he see's and he knows horse's. James was a civil war era reenactor on real horse's. You have to see how he captured that and the face on this new statue.Be easy do not be like your friend at Fort MacArthur

Great the Rudy and Donald were able to attend. Looking forward to your pictures.
Did you try to recruit the Doctor to be a member of PSHS?
Franz
If I am not mistaken the base of the statue is the seal of the US Army? or US?

Hi Franz:
Yes we are trying very hard to get Dr> Mellijor to join. Application to be mail to him.
James Muir wants him to start a PSHS Chapter in Chicago and I think Jim will win. "Right Donald".
Franz, the doctor had a video and camera guy that took wonderful shots that once we get them will be posted. Some of their work is the ones Victor posted for me.
Be well my Scouts brothers.
Rudy

David, We live very close to his gallery and his studio. We also would like to know how much the small ( maquette) size costs! We must purchase one, after all James used my husbands facial features on it. I'm so glad I encouraged my husband to contact him for this project. He had no second thoughts to participate to honor the scouts . Bonnie Flower

Duty First
First to Armywife. James never told me who he used for the face. I gave him my dad's picture and volunteered mine.
Friscohare. The statue is in a private museum owned by Dr Mellijor. He has a 9000 sqft house just for his art work. He lives north of the house. I will have to look up the invitation to remember the city it is in. It is not open to the public. It is in the Lake Forest area.
I have requested one his maquette that will be converted to a filipino face. Only 5 of these will be made. They are his numbered 41,42,43,44 and 45 one's from the original 48 he made. The non filipino face ones cost 2500-3500. I have put dibs on number 42.
Hope this helps everyone.
Rudy Cabigas//honored to have been at the unveiling with Donald Plata
