Here's a picture of a commemorative plaque listing the names of Filipinos and Filipino-Spanish mestizos who fought in the Spanish Civil War. This plaque was presented pre WW2. (it even has some bullet scars from the time of the 1944 liberation). The plaque is located in Casino Espanol in Manila. It lists about 80 guys who fought for the nationalist side. There were also Filipinos who fought for the republican/communist side but thier records are even more sketchy.....Anyway I found this old German propaganda newsreel. (Check out 12:20). www.archive.org/details/1939-Im-Kampf-gegen-den-WeltfeindA captured Filipino volunteer from the international brigades along with some Frenchmen, Ameicans, Brtish commonwealth guys etc. The pinoy was saying he was just drinking beer, then some friend came along and asked him how he was, he replied "I'm unemployed", and so he ended up in Spain, ha, ha, ha mga pinoy talaga.

Lawrence,
In 1898 during our independence day Gen. Emilio aguinaldo re-defined the meaning of the word "Filipino" making it available to all the inhabitant of the archipelago thus creating a "state" for both the natives and the spaniard born in the islands(archipelago)

ROFL! Pati ba doon OFW ang Pinoy??? (Even THERE, there were Filipino Overseas contract workers)
Lolz, so is there any truth to the rumors that there were Pinoys in the Ostbattalions? I know that there were Koreans definitely - a couple were captured on D-Day. When I was working as an ESL teacher to Koreans one student told me about a movie in Korea about those Koreans in the Ostbattalions and there was an interview in the documentary where this Korean was talking about how there were other Asians including Filipinos in the Ostbattalion.
Given my fascination with the Widerstand (German Resistance) and Deutsches Afrika Korps that really made me prick up my ears!

Just one thing: the republican side was not communist only, there were socialists, anarchists, liberals .. sad to say but communists of the P.C.E. , supporters of Stalin killed many anarchists, socialists and other more than the nationalists of Franco.... .
